For runners used to those bigger differences between the heel and toe, the Torin 4.5 Plush might take some getting used to since it works different muscles in your feet and legs. JARRETT: As I write this, I realize that I have very little to complain about with the Torin 4.5 Plush. Yeah, there should have been a second eyelet for lacing and Altra seems to be moving in the direction of slimmer profiles, but the ounce of weight loss is great, the upper feels good, and the midsole and outsole didn’t need much changing. The Torin 4 has a firmer more responsive feel and the Torin 4 Plush has a much softer, more pillow like ride to it. The Torin 4.5 Plush is an updated version of the softer variant. JARRETT: People will say the toe box is a bit shallow, but that didn’t cause me any issues as the upper is a soft and forgiving material. I also have enough room in the toe box.

I have zero complaint about the sole unit of the Altra Torin 4.0. The sole unit is comprised of a Altra’s new Quantic midsole and their FootPod outsole. Designers enhanced the comfort of the toe box with a knit upper. The knit is lightweight and pliable, so it flexes naturally with your foot as you transition from landing to takeoff. There was an overlay around the toe box in the previous version that annoyingly creased. Altra softened that up and made it less pronounced around the pinky toe so there are no issues anymore.This shoe has gone through many changes and iterations over the years. We had great success with the original Torin at our shop. Altra loves to play around with this model. About 3 years ago, they introduced the Torin Knit to their lineup. There was a little bit of a price difference, and the upper was different. The material holding the tongue down does not cause a problem other than giving the Torin 4.0 a tighter feel when putting the shoe on, but once I start running I don’t notice the material or the tightness at all. Let’s clear up some confusing stuff with the Altra Torin 4.5 right off the bat. It’s bad enough we’re using half numbers for shoe names (half versions in Altra are just changes to the upper, btw), but now we’re getting weird with calling this the Altra Torin 4.5 Plush. It’s weird, because… there’s no “regular” Altra Torin 4.5 anymore. This is a max cushion neutral shoe, which is Altra’s most cushioned road shoe. The Altra Duo was a big super crazy cushioned shoe and very comfortable. It looked like a true big boy over there on our wall. Now that shoe is out of the lineup; the Torin is now the biggest max cushion shoe you can get from Altra. this is going to be your friend for all your long kind of stuff. What I liked in the Update Since this is a .5 update, the midsole and outsole are the same. In this case, that’s not a bad thing. With the Torin 4 Plush, I liked the Quantic midsole. It’s super cushioned and rebounds well. The outsole (which Altra calls Footpod Technology), is covered in full-blown rubber to grip any surface and mapped to the bones and tendons in the foot to help with flex and natural movements.
