Imagine the excitement of a Steam Train journey to Santaland! Our magical Santa Special services run on various dates and times in the weeks before Christmas, details of which are below. They depart from Sheringham station and take passengers through some of Norfolk’s most beautiful winter scenery whilst the adults are served sherry and mince pies, children receive a chocolate and a soft drink. Santa is waiting by his open fire at Weybourne Station (specially transformed into Santaland!), ready to give all children a warm welcome, both young and old. Each infant (under 1 year) and child (1 year to 14 years) will receive an appropriate present for their age. After a period of time looking around the station, passengers reboard the train for their journey back to Sheringham. With professional entertainers, quality presents and of course a ride behind a steam train, Christmas turns into a wonderful experience on the North Norfolk Railway’s unique Santa Specials. 2017 – Santa Specials on Saturdays 16 and 23 December, Sundays 3, 10 and 23 December. Pre-booking highly recommended to be sure of your desired date and time (and its cheaper!). £9.50 each Adult/Child pre-booked (babies under 1 are free – please bring a present for Santa to give if you wish) £9.00 each Adult/Child pre-booked for Groups of 8 or more. £12 each Adult/Child on the day – subject to available space. Santa Specials are an enjoyable experience for everyone from ages 1 to 100. The visit starts with a short train ride behind one of our steam engines. Visitors make their way to the ex-GWR Transfer Shed where snow and bubble machines provide a truly exciting experience for the little ones and Santa will be ready in his Grotto. Steam Events The Pumping Station is in steam 8 times a year on the dates listed below with all engines running including the James Watt beam engines, the Linby colliery winding engine and miniature railway. Please note that the steam plant is very old and therefore we cannot guarantee everything will be running and, although rare, break downs can occur! Underground Reservoir Tours We also offer tours of the underground reservoir during steam events which run every half hour from 11.30am – 3.30pm. An additional charge of £2 per adult and £1 per child aged between 5-16 applies and spaces on the tour bus are limited to 20 people per tour. Please note that the number of tours per day may be reduced or increased depending on visitor demand. Tickets for the tours are purchased from the Superintendent’s House on the day of visiting. When not in steam the Pumping Station is open to the public every Sunday for a limited number of hours, please see times below. The Visitor Centre on Gillingham Pier, and the ship herself will be open on Saturdays as usual in 2017 from 11th February (half term holiday) until 16th December. Normal opening times will be 11am to 4pm with last admissions strictly at 3pm. We now have all 4 of the ship’s public spaces accessible to visitors and, of course, you can view the great engine and visualise how it would have looked and sounded as it powered the ship through the water. The large upper aft saloon is being prepared for private hire for meetings, celebrations and parties and will be available from the spring onwards. The forward saloon hosts a coffee shop. The lower forward saloon is a cinema room with films about the ship and the lower aft saloon will be used for various displays and exhibitions including our “Memories of Dunkirk” which will run from 27th May through to mid-August. Knowledgeable guides are always on hand to answer your questions and point out items of interest. Our Year End Toy Fair is back and better than ever! The ever popular event will see traders and dealers selling and trading toys, collectables, and models. The perfect way to spend your Christmas money! The event has free admission and free parking, and will be open from 10am to 4pm.
Wednesday 28th December 2016, Thursday 29th December 2016; 10.00am – 4.00pm each day. Our volunteers have rescued and restored 30 old stationary steam engines – the engines which once powered the cotton and woollen mills of the North of England. Most will be running in steam on these 2 days only from 10.00 am until 4.00 pm. We have the largest collection of working textile mill steam engines in the country – and possibly in the world! Some of our engines are unique – the only on of its kind to survive anywhere. Admission is free, with unlimited free parking on Morrison’s Supermarket Car Park off Chorley Old Road..
The season’s highlight is the Grand New Year Steam Up, a chance to see all the Museum’s majestic engines powering into 2018. Families can enjoy seasonal activities and the café will be open and serving hot food throughout the Steam Up, giving Christmas cooks a well-earned rest!
