Description

This book is for those of us who were always railing against injustice, even when we didn't fully understand what it was we were fighting for or against. And thank goodness for independent thinkers, if we are going to grow culture it's totally necessary.

I was planning on just dipping in and out of this but ended up reading it from start to finish in a day. I'm working on quite a few things at the minute and wouldn't mind one day actually getting published in print.

Early in the text, for example, Walker states the “pathology paradigm consistently results in autistic people being stigmatized, dehumanized, abused, harmed, and traumatized by professionals and often their own families. Ultimately a great book, but I feel I would have gotten as much out of it from reading the second half alone. I am slightly annoyed to find that the ideas I thought I had that were original have actually been thought before, and articulated more elegantly than I could have done.

There also seems to be a hierarchy of autistic people - those who should be trusted and those that are “tame autistics” benefitting from a life of internalized oppression.I really wanted to offer this book to my peers at college, as we are on the final level of a counselling qualification, and I feel that it is so important it is for counsellors to be informed about how autistic people actually feel, so that their understanding is not dictated by the medical model. I think it’ll be helpful in giving people a different way of looking at their diagnosis and understanding of themselves through the neurodiversity paradigm rather than the pathology paradigm. Featuring a vibrant rainbow design, and our super-sized Q logo, you won't find a more stylish way to make a statement. Paired with these silly mistakes is an academic language that felt inaccessible at times because of the complexity of the word choice.
