Description

He is coauthor, along with Annalyn Swan, of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning de Kooning: An American Master. Figuring out how to navigate the interface to find the really interesting content takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s worth persisting, and the content is constantly growing.

This is the opulently printed hardbound catalogue produced in conjunction with the 2002 Gagosian Gallery Beverly Hills exhibition of collaborative photographs by Jenny Saville and Glen Luchford. Her work reveals a deep intellectual and sensory awareness of how the body has been represented over time and across cultures. Watching documentaries about artists when I finish work at night has become a habit of mine because it keeps me in the zone but allows me to relax. Perhaps the next monograph, and there surely will be one as Saville continues to grow and mature, will give us more new work. Gayford also spoke with the artist about her works in the exhibition Jenny Saville: Latent at Gagosian, rue de Castiglione, Paris.

Exploring nuances in portraiture from the late nineteenth century to today—and testing the very definition of the genre— Person of Interest presents depictions of the literal and abstracted body from Sheldon’s rich holdings and selected loans. From an interview Saville comments on the divide between what is created and what one pictures in one's mind, "I can barely look at the earlier painting I made. Artwork, left to right: © Georg Baselitz; © Louise Bonnet; © Zeng Fanzhi; © 2019 Takashi Murakami/Kaikai Kiki Co.

The multipart exhibition places Saville’s paintings and drawings in dialogue with masterworks of the Italian Renaissance, including some of Michelangelo’s greatest masterpieces, offering a revealing encounter between the contemporary and the historical. It has a lot of footage of his studio in the Hamptons, and of him looking back through his archive and discussing his life and painting.

Despite the dangers of absolutes, I have to say that Jenny Saville is the best thing that has ever happened to painting.Thirteen years after her first Rizzoli monograph, British artist Jenny Saville releases this much-anticipated volume--her most comprehensive to date--including many never-before-published paintings. This much-anticipated volume unites new work with many of Saville's paintings and drawings to date, accompanied by essays that explore Saville's continuing fascination with the human body within a broad art-historical context. The articles accompanying this monograph are excellent as well -- and not nearly disturbing as the images. He’s trapped in his own toothache, liver troubles and his procrastinations over authority with his servant. Thirteen years after her first Rizzoli monograph, British artist Jenny Saville releases this much-anticipated volume her most comprehensive to date including many never-before-published paintings.
