Description

All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate. Even a small dose of Insomnia… will likely give you a bad case of the jitters… It's a nimble suspense story, but it’s even more disturbing as an account of how a restless brain can weaken and lethally doubt itself." Washington Post Emma’s mother has been a resident of the Hartwell Secure Unit for over thirty years, following a complete mental breakdown on the date of her own 40th birthday. Her symptoms started around the same time, and are eerily similar to Emma’s. Is history repeating itself? Or, is there something far more sinister going on? Swift and entertaining… When Pinborough unveils her first surprise about a third of the way in, it’s a good one… Cross Her Hearthas a welcome sisterhood-is-powerful vibe; it’s a novel that defines women by their relationships with one another, even as their creator is ruthlessly shoving them into position for the next twist.”— New York Times Book Review Overall: Even though I find some explanations a little exaggerated, the high tension, the suspense and mystery’s unfolding, gripping and riveting storytelling were great. Most of the characters are definitely annoying but at least I loved Emma!

INSOMNIA: A gripping new crime thriller for 2023 from the No INSOMNIA: A gripping new crime thriller for 2023 from the No

If you loved Behind Her Eyes, prepare to be totally and utterly blown away by Insomnia. Sarah Pinborough is a twisted genius." — Lisa Jewell The author has been a hit or miss with me, but when the blurb described this one as a "twisty, mind-bending thriller", I had to give it a try. Who doesn't love a twisty thriller?! Sarah Pinborough is an adult fantasy, thriller, screenwriter, cross-genre novelist with numerous awards under her name. Sarah has managed to publish more than 20 novels and has even written for BBC. Currently, Sarah is working with numerous television companies on fresh, original projects. Some of the author’s most recent works include a dystopian love story titled, The Death House and a thriller, 13 Minutes that was bought by Netflix. Harper Fiction in the UK published the author’s subsequent adult novel, Behind Her Eyes, a psychological thriller this year in January. This book has been sold in more than 20 countries and has also been sold during an action. There are numerous discussions currently going on about adapting the novel for a screenplay. Emma's insomnia, her paranoia, her sanity/insanity, her turning the big 4-0 (oh dreadful), the silly poem about candles, the awful husband, naive daughter and unconvincing plot made for a tedious read. Dead to Heris set amid Savannah’s elite: a lusty, greedy, exclusive society of old money where secrets are buried deep. Sarah Pinborough is always ahead of her reader, expertly weaving her killer plot. Thrilling, sexy and utterly unputdownable."— Beverly Vincent, Co-Editor (with Stephen King) of Flight or FrightWithin minutes of opening Dead to Heryou will be unsettled, charmed, riled, empowered, and aroused.Pinborough at the height of her powers. Josh Malerman Twelve days before her birthday, Emma begins to suffer from terrible insomnia. She is slowly losing time and is compelled to do the same things her mother did right before she went mad. Gripping… As she strives to figure out who’s trying to destroy her and why, the suspense becomes almost unbearable.”— Publishers Weekly on Insomnia

It made me toss and turn, not from anticipation or being twisty, but from forcing myself finish it. Argh The conclusion devolved into chaos and it took me a little while to acclimatise to what was revealed. Once I had done so, I could only applaud Pinborough for her repeated ingenuity and the different elements she brings to the genres she pens in. Insomnia is an 'unreliable narrator' thriller done right—Pinborough expertly draws readers into Emma’s increasingly terrifying world, where no one and nothing can be trusted.... One of the most downright entertaining thrillers I’ve read in ages." — Crime by the Book

The amazing Sarah Pinborough has done it again with this brilliant, pacy story of lies and deceit. B.A. Paris

If you loved Behind Her Eyes, prepare to be totally and utterly blown away by Insomnia. Sarah Pinborough is a twisted genius." Lisa Jewell Pinborough shrewdly transforms a romantic suspense novel into an eerie thriller calculated to creep you out…Pinborough keeps us guessing about just who’s manipulating whom – until the ending reveals that we’ve been wholly complicit in this terrifying mind game. New York Times Book Review on Behind Her Eyes The plotting in Cross Her Heartis calm, cool and beautifully orchestrated—until, WHAM, you marvel at what Pinborough has just tossed in your lap. There are plenty of I-can’t-believe-she-just-did-that moments that will have you sitting straight up in your chair. What a terrific ride.”— Meg Gardiner, author of UnsubThe amazing Sarah Pinborough has done it again with this brilliant, pacy story of lies and deceit.”— B.A. Paris on Cross Her Heart Absolutely brilliant, completely unputdownable and so satisfying – Pinborough just gets better and better" Jenny Colgan Emma Averell loves her life—her high-powered legal career, her two beautiful children, and her wonderful stay-at-home husband—but it wasn’t always so perfect. When she was just five years old, Emma and her older sister went into foster care because of a deeply disturbing incident with their mother. Her sister can remember a time when their mother was loving and “normal,” but Emma can only remember her as one thing—a monster. Big Little Liesmeets Rebeccain Sarah Pinborough’s Dead to Her, a saucy novel about insecure second wives dragged down by secrets [and] jealousies… This may not be the most important novel you’ll read this year, but it’s definitely among the most delicious.”— Washington Post Roils with passion, rancor, and greed wrapped in Southern politesse... Pinbrough’s intricately woven mystery will please fans of B.A. Paris and Paula Hawkins.”— Publishers Weekly on Dead to Her

Secondly: Emma is absolutely likable character who reminds me of a juggler: trying so hard to balance all those balls above her head, multitasking all the time by putting the others first. And that monster emerged right around their mother’s fortieth birthday, the same milestone Emma is approaching now.

A masterpiece of suspense...A rare joy...Creates a sense of disorientation and dread that is highly satisfying. But it is with the plot, so tight and yet also intricate, that Pinborough shines. No detail or character is extraneous. Booklist (starred review) on Behind Her Eyes Pinborough specializes in steamy mysteries… cooked up in the outer reaches of her imagination…’What could go wrong?’ a character asks cheerfully at the end. Maybe it’s the equivalent of the hand emerging from the grave at the end of the movie ‘Carrie’. Or maybe not. New York Times Book Review on Insomnia Even though Emma isn't a character I loved, she works well given the context of the story. You just don't know what to think as the author successfully strings everything along. I'm not going to lie, the ending is not the most satisfying, but I didn't exactly hate it either. Once again, Sara Pinborough delivers a book that is ripe for discussion. Thirdly: I still absorb the revelations about the mystery about those numbers and the reason of Patricia’s madness! Pinborough’s unsettling, remorseless psychological thriller is horribly plausible and expertly plotted’ Sunday Times
