Something shifted in me that night. A small voice in my head said, maybe you can make a way for yourself as a poet here, too.’ Move about the daycare single file. Pretend you are visiting your neighbourhood and present various obstacles: a stop sign, a yellow light, someone crossing the street, a bus, a sign indicating that you must turn right, etc. Ask children what you must do at each obstacle.

Just had a good look! Very impressive and may come in very useful in my office. Will recommend without doubt— Gavyn Fresco ( @GSF0371) Hiromi Kawakami collects here a dreamlike conglomeration of semi-related characters and events from her part of town, if the title and interior clues are to be believed. As humans, all of us live in a society are bound to a neighbourhood. It is an essential place which has a great impact on our lives. So much so that it does determine where we are in life and how we are doing. It is a fact that if we are not happy in our neighbourhood, we will not live peacefully. Through my neighborhood essay, I will explain about my neighbourhood and the reasons why I love it. This was a great collection of short stories at times venturing off into some weird and dark places -- loved it! There seems to currently be a movement of contemporary female Japanese authors writing surreal short fiction and I'm super excited to read more of that :)Kawakami Hiromi ( 川上弘美 Kawakami Hiromi) born April 1, 1958, is a Japanese writer known for her off-beat fiction. Like with her previous works in English, her subdued storytelling is softer than Yoko Ogawa's and the spheres from which she draws her subject matter are not as far-flung as Yoko Tawada's, but any of her books are approachable, somewhat enjoyable, and similar in feel to Banana Yoshimoto's. The subtle strangeness of this neighbourhood is hugely reminiscent of Royston Vasey in The League of Gentlemen: a place full of usual people who behave unusually or are subject to unusual circumstances, be they quietly supernatural, antisocial, or plainly bizarre.

The translator has done an excellent job translating the crisp, concise style, and each story entices readers with a perplexing mystery or a fascinating character. Despite the shortcoming, it's that many of the stories all come to the same strange, unresolved ending, making it of it’s own kind. People From My Neighbourhood by Hiromi Kawakami, Book Review People From My Neighbourhood by Hiromi Kawakami, Book Review

People from My Neighborhood is a collection of odd, unconventional and interconnected stories about unique individuals that resides in the same neighborhood. The chapters were extremely short and undemanding. I needed this kind of book to lighten up my mood after reading too much dark stuff these past few days. This definitely relaxed my senses. A bossy child who lives under a white cloth near a tree; a schoolgirl who keeps doll's brains in a desk drawer; an old man with two shadows, one docile and one rebellious; a diplomat no one has ever seen who goes fishing at an artificial lake no one has ever heard of. These are some of the inhabitants of People from My Neighborhood. But here I chose to let go and have fun with these excitingly strange and surreal stories. Though I couldn’t help but draw parallels with Tom Waits’ iconic What’s He Building: the story of a voyeuristic and nosy neighbour imagining absurd horrors out of thin air.
