Shred Dog is a company that cuts out the middle man and sells direct to you. Their model is designed to get parents quality gear while avoiding the retail markup. If you are looking to extend the life of your base layers, consider using specialized detergents every time or once in a while to get your base layers clean. We like Wool Wash for wool or BaseWash and BaseFresh for synthetics.

What is it? Fear not, it’s not akin to your favourite woolly jumper. Merino wool is lighter in weight than traditional wool, and its temperature-regulating properties make it perfect for base layers. Ibex has long been a favorite of several testers, and the Ibex Journey, long sleeve crew base layer, did not disappoint. The Journey is a basic, lightweight baselayer made with merino wool and nylon blended fabric. The merino wool provides odor protection, while the nylon provides durability and less itch. However, we found that it still had some itchiness, surprising because our previous Ibex baselayers had zero itch. While Icebreaker baselayers are one of the priciest merino wool brands out there, their thermals are called the Oasis for a reason. These baselayers are designed to move with the body and contour to every body movement. A bonus of the more relaxed fit and style is that you can layer them over top of a thin baselayer on super cold days. While we may love the fabric of a base layer top, if the base layer bottom doesn't fit right, it won't feel comfortable. Worse yet, with a merino base layer bottom, we've sometime seen the same fabric we love for a top not have enough stretch for a bottom…and to develop holes in unfortunate areas. To identify what qualities to look for, we interviewed Tucson-based professional trail runner Ashleigh Thompson (she/hers). A member of the Red Lake Ojibwe Nation and a Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology at the University of Arizona, Ashleigh believes being outside is paramount to healing and happiness. She promotes recreating respectfully on Native lands and creating outdoor spaces that are welcoming to everyone. WARMTH Cons: This is a premium fabric, with a premium price tag to match. Some of our testers also found it less comfy to wear than some synthetic tops. Synthetic material

The Patagonia Capilene Midweight excels as a baselayer compared to other synthetic layers we considered. It’s comfortable, which is an essential aspect of next-to-skin layers. We love the Patagonia Capilene Midweight and think it shines as a running base layer. It's the best synthetic base layer out there, with decades of refinement and perfection. This synthetic base layer is versatile, suitable for wearing by itself or layering under a mid-layer. While there are less expensive synthetic base layers, the quality and durability (not to mention relative eco-friendliness) of the Capilene Midweight make it the best choice for synthetic. For a decade, our team of experts has bought and tested dozens of the best base layers on the market. For this update, we compare 17 of the most popular options side-by-side. From the ski slopes to alpine climbs to sleeping out under the stars, our in-depth analysis derives from real-world adventures undertaken while wearing each model. We score all base layers across key areas of performance, like warmth, breathability, and drying speed. Whether it's for the warm or cold season, a quality base layer is sure to keep you dry and comfortable, no matter where your next outdoor escapade takes you. My son loves the husky baselayer because they fit more loose and he has sensory issues. TMM Team Member AnnaWhichever detergents or washes you use, always opt for machine washing, as handwashing can leave behind residues and films. I’ll be the first to admit that I was late to jump on the baselayers for kids bandwagon. I’ve always loved and worn them as an adult, but I did not appreciate until very recently how much they truly make a difference in keeping kids warm from the inside out.

Here are some questions to help point you in the direction of the base layer of your dreams: HOW MUCH ARE YOU WILLING TO SPEND ON A BASE LAYER? Not really. I know I’ve mentioned a few good benefits of thumb holes in your outdoor gear, but let’s be honest, we all fared perfectly well without them before. You can always keep your hands warm on a run or a hike with gloves, and though I’ve heard runners say they like thumb holes because it stops their sleeves from riding up, I can’t personally say that’s ever a problem I’ve encountered. Maybe I don’t run swiftly enough? Merino wool is great at temperature regulation and will help keep you warm on colder days and cooler on warmer days. Merino doesn’t dry fast if it is not in a dry environment, however, it will still keep you warm and won’t make you feel clammy even when wet.If you’re after an extra layer to take the edge off during spring, try this cropped top that pairs well with high-waisted leggings. Some of our testers bemoaned their cold stomachs, but it’s a good choice if you’re keen to try a different style. Best base layer for HIIT sessions: Icebreaker Women's BodyfitZoneTM Merino 150 Zone Long Sleeve Thermal Top I’ve always prioritized the gear on the outside but with time I’ve discovered that one of the best secrets for truly keeping kids warm is the layer on the inside.
