Step back in time when you visit our Edwardian Waterworks! Twyford first started pumping water over 100 years ago, during the Edwardian era. This Open Day will commemorate those days, looking back to the times when everything was worked by steam, and looking forward as well to when our boiler and steam pumping engine will be working again. Join in the fun by coming along dressed in Edwardian attire and we’ll give you free admission! http://www.twyfordwaterworks.co.uk/
Our theme for this Open Day is ‘Vintage Vehicles’ The Waterworks welcomes classic cars enjoying a run out to the pumping station, and other vintage vehicles on display.
Our very popular end of season rally – steam engines, cars, stationary engines, demonstrations, displays, and miniature railway rides (free to children). Find out about the story of drinking water in our new Discovery Zone. Enjoy an informative stroll around our Waterworks with everything fully open, restored machinery in operation and our volunteers on hand to explain how it all used to work. If you wish, join a free Guided Tour to find out all about the Waterworks. Children can follow their own trail looking for clues to the story of the site. Can you find ‘Twyford Toad’? Learn about the progress we are making to restore our boilers and steam pumping engine! Discover the lime kilns up above the main works, where you can also watch the industrial narrow gauge railway at work. Follow our nature trail around the three acre site and see what you can spot! Relax in our renowned Tea Room, offering a wide range of hot & cold drinks, sandwiches, toasties, snacks, cakes & ice creams, all at a reasonable price. Please feel free to make use of the picnic tables around the site too. http://www.twyfordwaterworks.co.uk/
See the website for more information. At the Oxford Bus Museum we tell the story of bus and coach travel around Oxfordshire over the last 130 years. Our exhibits include a historic preserved horse-drawn tram, motor buses, coaches and a wide selection of artefacts. Inclduing bus stops, ticket machines, timetables, posters and staff uniforms. We also have and lots of fantastic photos illustrating our diverse public transport history. Since 2004 we’ve also been home to the Morris Motors Museum, which charts the story of how these classic British cars and commercial vehicles were produced at Cowley, in the city. Our impressive collection of vintage Morris vehicles represents those produced during William Morris’s life. The link between William Morris founder of Morris Motors (who later became Lord Nuffield) and buses in Oxford, can be traced to 1913 when he and a partner started the first motorbus service in the city. 2013 was a significant year for us. A double centenary celebration – 100 years of motorbuses in the city of Oxford and 100 years of car manufacture in Cowley. We also have a unique collection of 40 vintage bicycles, including a Penny Farthing. It wouldn’t be Oxford without bikes! A visit […]
