Description

The range includes Wool Compost Ericaceous (for acid-loving plants), Lakeland Gold (claybuster and mulch), Wool Compost for potting and containers and now there is also Wool Compost for Seeds. Contains wool – like some of our other gardening products such as our garden felt and shillies, this compost contains WOOL! It provides a firm foundation for a healthy start in plant life with a gentle sustained feeding to take plants through to potting on. As the proteins in wool breaks down, nitrogen is gradually released, acting as a slow release fertiliser which feeds them throughout the growing season and keeps your plants fruiting and flowering. From 2024, the sale of peat for use on private gardens and allotments will be banned in England There will also be a final voluntary phase-out target of 2030 for professional growers of fruit, vegetables and plants.

We have found that it works just as well, if not better, than compost containing peat and even has a similar soft texture. Social Association approved – the compost is sustainably made from renewable, natural ingredients on Dalefoot Farm in the Lake District and is approved for organic growing by the Soil Association. Although I was disappointed that it is not grey, like the sheep, I am very pleased so far with the product being quite dry to feel, so less messy. Made from sheep's wool and bracken, the mixture is high in natural nutrients and has excellent water retention.Their Whitefaced Woodland and Cheviot sheep flocks run up the bracken covered fells to Loadpot where they live and rear their lambs and graze side by side with our herd of native Fell ponies. No extra feeding of fertilisers needed as the compost contains all the nutrients needed for the entire growing season. One hundred per cent natural and British, produced on a traditional hill farm in the Lake District National Park.

No other growing media has such a high concentration of naturally derived nutrients for improved plant size and quality. In a dry weather situation, the natural water retention of wool fibres also means that you need 50% less watering while the high levels of natural potash from the bracken promotes flowering and fruiting as well as healthy growth. Traditionally, here in the Lake District, bracken has been used as an animal winter bedding material, which was then spread on the land in Spring to fertilise the fields.

Contains wool – like some of our other gardening products such as our garden felt and shillies, this compost contains WOOL!

I first came across Dalefoot Compost at RHS Chelsea in 2015 and felt rather ashamed that despite living in the Lake District I had very little knowledge of the company or their products. The use of bracken in the Wool Compost is also beneficial because the spread of this aggressive, waist-high plant in the Lake District makes grazing difficult and impacts upon native species. Completely peat-free – this compost is 100% peat-free which means it has great environmental benefits (you can read more about that below!Made from totally renewable resources with great environmental benefit to help you garden more sustainable. Peat, as defined by the International Peatland Society, is “Peat is the surface organic layer of a soil that consists of partially decomposed organic matter, derived mostly from plant material, which has accumulated under conditions of waterlogging, oxygen deficiency, high acidity and nutrient deficiency”. With added Comfrey ‘Bocking 14’ variety, which has high levels of potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen for healthy plant growth, larger flowers, and bigger crops. Soil Association approvedDalefoot’s Wool Compost for Seeds has a fine texture with good drainage to provide a perfect start for seeds.
