Despite those minor grumbles, the QC Earbuds II are a superb pair of wireless earbuds, and class-leading when it comes to their ability to reduce the impact of external distractions.

Weight: 8g each/50g case | Battery life: 4 hours (20 hours with case) | Bluetooth: aptX Adaptive 5.0 | Waterproof: IPX4 | Mics: Six Bose have found gains with the audio performance too, with the top end of the frequency range brighter and bass is bigger and punchier than before. Vocals carry more weight too, and there’s a better sense of depth and width than we can recall with the original. Yes, they’re big and a bit gawky-looking in situ. Yes, in relative terms the charging case is massive. And yes, an all-in total of 18 hours of battery life is nothing to brag about. But as we said, if you want a specialist you’re going to have to compromise. Bose has never been one to stuff the headphones full of features, and QuietComfort Earbuds II follow the same path. There is a three-band EQ to change the sound profile of the buds within the app, and the wireless performance is excellent, with barely a hint of a dropout noted.Comfort is subjective, but rest assured that our reviewers have worn the buds being tested for hours at a time and in all manner of situations, be that in a quiet room at home, running in the gym or on a busy commute. This ensures we’re able to give an informed opinion on how comfortable they are to wear, how secure the fit is and how well they withstand rain and sweat. The Ultra provide a comfortable fit and lots of features. Bluetooth 5.3 is a big bonus, while they are also Bose's first in-ears to offer its very own spatial audio tech, Immersive Audio. You really want app support: They do amazing things without a companion app (on-ear volume control, EQ, etc.) but if you want a visual cue of their battery life, no dice. Audio performance is also upgraded over the original Pros, with new drivers and amplifiers. During our testing, we rated the sound on offer from the Pro 2 as excellent – there’s rich audio across genres and a wide and expansive soundstage.

What you don’t get, however, is very much in the smarts department, with nothing in the way of ANC or transparency modes or even built-in microphones to take calls. The Bluetooth battery life is also rather limited at just eight hours of use, so they’re not the perfect all-rounders despite that high-end price tag.

What are the best wireless earbuds 2023?

Such features make the Buds2 Pro our number-one choice if you’re already invested in the Galaxy ecosystem but if you don’t fall into that category, you’ll find better value elsewhere on this list. It's only when nailing down the finer details of audio quality, we head for quieter environments where we compare the wireless earbuds we're testing to price comparable models and current class-leaders at the money. This gives us the chance to come to solid conclusions and peg each pair on sound quality. It's a shame there's no support for high-quality wireless audio codecs such as LDACor aptX HD, nor is there wireless charging or Bluetooth multipoint (both of which the Sony WF-1000XM5 cater for). But we don't think this is the end of the world when you consider that these classy buds ooze such sophistication. With that all being said, it should come as no surprise that the reviewer was very impressed by the audio experience on offer, delivering naturalistic and precise tones all the way down to 10Hz. The buds deliver deep, rapid and extensively detailed low frequencies, with a similarly controlled top-end boasting crisp treble sounds with just enough bite to make the high frequencies shine. We’re here to help with this this list of the best wireless earbuds we’ve tested. With so many true wireless models available, we get the chance to test a lot number of them each year, ranging from affordable choices to premium pairs, so we’ve got the knowledge to assess which are ‘very good’ and which are the ‘very best’.

Codecs determine how Bluetooth transmits information to your device. The SBC codec is pretty much universal across all devices and works just fine, though you’ll open up the possibility to listen to higher resolution audio with more advanced codecs such as AAC, which is favoured by Apple, or Qualcomm’s aptX, aptX HD or aptX Adaptive codecs. Bear in mind that your output device must also support the codec: iPhones don’t support aptX so even if you own the very best wireless earbuds money can buy, you won’t be able to make use of it. Can I make and receive phone and video calls?Active noise cancellation is more effective than it was on the Momentum True Wireless 3’s predecessor and Sennheiser has introduced a clever new feature whereby you can have the buds switch noise-cancelling and sound modes when you move between certain locations. Sound quality – always a strong point of Sennheiser headphones – is excellent and there are a number of ways of tweaking it via the revamped Smart Control companion app. The earbuds form factor means they stay secure in your ears while on running machines and during other vigorous activity. The ‘tap’ UI has been binned in favour of a ‘squeeze’ action on either stem – it is far more direct and assured. Then there is the star feature of the new Pros: noise cancelling.

If ANC is a top priority, then the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2 are without question the best noise-cancelling earbudsoverall. The new flagship introduced several upgrades over the original such as adaptiveactive noise cancellation(ANC), Bluetooth 5.3, and sound calibration technology for improved sound quality. The battery life here is also excellent, with 8 hours for each earbud, and 32 hours in total – more than double the length of the Bose Sports Earbuds, which are much more expensive. At this low price, sacrifices have to be made with no wireless or fast-charging support, and only SBC Bluetooth quality. Admittedly, you don’t have to look all that long or hard to identify the areas where the TWS-50s have been built down to a price. Happily, none of these areas impacts the day-to-day experience of SoundMAGIC ownership. No, the plastics used for the earbuds and their charging case don’t feel in any way luxurious. Yes, the digital display on the case that indicates how much battery life it’s holding is tragically (or thrillingly, depending on how old you are) 80s. But where it really matters, the TWS050s are all business. The Edifier NeoBuds Pro are a fantastic choice if you’re after the powers of ANC at a more affordable price. The ANC is also great, as demonstrated during testing where low-frequency noise was almost completely nullified, while a decent proportion of mid-range noise disappeared, with the seal of the silicone tips helping to remove high frequency sounds too. The performance isn’t as good as what you’d find on the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds, but it surprised us how close the managed to get to the premium options. There are two ANC modes here – Low and High – and we’d recommend the Low setting as High can increase bass to the point where it is overbearing. Our keen-eared reviewers listen to a huge variety of musical genres from a range of sources during testing, including Spotify, Tidal and locally stored audio files. We’ll also put earbuds through their paces across whichever Bluetooth codecs they support using a compatible device and feed them high-resolution content if they have Hi-res capabilities.
