Problems beset the film's musical score as well. Malcolm Arnold originally was retained to work on it, but he apparently found certain aspects of the story so disturbing that he withdrew from the project after composing only the main themes. Buxton Orr completed the score. [12] When Barbara isn't writing or publishing, which isn't very often these days, she is playing tennis, hanging out with friends and family in beautiful Lake Tahoe or reading books! James excels at making relationship struggles believably real yet fun to read. The characters wield James’ usual wit and chemistry in another smart story in her lineup.”– Booklist At first, Ford and Victoria get off on the wrong foot. A lot can be heard through the wall their respective lofts share – like Victoria’s hair dryer at 6am every morning. Or the fact that Ford seems to bring home a different girl every other night. “Seems” being the important words because he isn’t necessarily a man-whore and has different reasons for different women coming to his place. But all these things start to annoy the other and they have a cute annoyance-flirting habit start-up. The film version was released by Columbia Pictures, in 1959, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift; it was directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz from a screenplay by Gore Vidal and Williams. The movie differed greatly from the stage version, adding many scenes, characters, and subplots. The Hollywood Production Code forced the filmmakers to cut out the explicit references to homosexuality.

When Ford’s sister, Nicole shows up crying with a small baby in tow, Victoria, a family law attorney, steps up and offers her services to help. Working together to locate Nicole’s baby daddy, Ford witnesses the softer side of Victoria, glimpses the good, caring woman she is on the inside. Victoria sees a sweet protective side to Ford, going all out to help his sister in need, and things begin to change and heat up between these two! Pecorari, Marie (2013). "Chaste or chased? These characters were like that... sometimes they were hit or miss... almost just right... other times they had all of the mixtures of sass, wit, warmth, and caring just right. The play was adapted for BBC television in 1993 under the direction of Royal National Theatre head Richard Eyre, and starring Maggie Smith, Rob Lowe, Richard E. Grant, and Natasha Richardson. It aired in America on PBS as an episode of Great Performances. [18] Smith was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie. [19] According to Lowe, his personal driver during the production of the telefilm was also the personal driver for Montgomery Clift on the 1959 film. Both Victoria and Ford enjoyed character growth, but of the two, Victoria seemed to shine the most, facing her worst fears, admitting her mistakes and learning from them. Now I’m curious to see who Julie is going to write about next! Most of her books connect through the characters, and I’d love to see Victoria’s friends get their own stories. Whoever it will be, I'm certain to be excited. If only we didn’t have to wait a year in between each of her books. :) What I really did love were the scenes stealers in Ford’s two best friends and all around funny guys. I also liked seeing Brooke show up in her best friend role to Ford and give him some good advice he needed to hear regarding Victoria. Beginning to doubt that Catherine is as deranged as Mrs. Venable claims, Cukrowicz moves Catherine into the state hospital for observation. Catherine's mother, and brother, pay her a visit there and reveal that Mrs. Venable will pay them a large sum of money if they sign papers to commit Catherine to the institution and allow a lobotomy to be performed.

Readers were forewarned that this one would be a bit different from the popular FBI related series. I figure sometimes different is a good thing. The same old/same old sometimes just gets plain old and boring. Well, maybe not in the case of James's books -- because I've never grown tired or stopped loving each and every one of those. But I'm not opposed to trying something new and refreshing, especially from an auto-buy and favorite author. So bring it on Julie James - bring it on! e.g. Catharine tells us how Sebastian talked about people, as if they were items on a menu – 'That one's delicious-looking, that one is appetizing' ... blonds were next on the menu ... Cousin Sebastian said he was famished for blonds"; she describes the "hot, ravenous mouth" of the married man she met at the Mardi Gras ball. [5] :20–21,36 Edwards, A. (2000). Katharine Hepburn: A Remarkable Woman. New York City, NY: St. Martin's Griffin. ISBN 978-0-312-20656-7. Suddenly One Summer starts out with a bam and I got really into it. Victoria is a successful divorce lawyer and she gets robbed. This freaks her out so much that she moves, but her condo won’t be ready until the end of the summer. So for the summer she leases a place. The play made its Broadway debut in 1995. It was performed together with Something Unspoken, the other one-act play that it originally appeared with under the title Garden District. It was presented by the Circle in the Square Theatre. The cast included Elizabeth Ashley, Victor Slezak and Celia Weston. [21] 1999 London West End debut [ edit ]

Ford’s sister, Nicole has a baby and Nicole doesn’t know who the father is. Nicole indirectly gets Victoria to help Nicole find the baby daddy. I liked that Nicole kind of help Ford and Victoria build this odd friendship.Barbara's love of writing developed out of a love of reading. Growing up in an all-boy neighborhood, she spent quite a bit of time reading through her mother's large library, many of which were romantic novels. After graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara, she went into Public Relations, but soon discovered that writing was her true passion. The play debuted on the West End in 1999 at the Comedy Theatre, London, starring Sheila Gish as Mrs.Venable, Rachel Weisz as Catharine, Gerard Butler as Dr.Cukrowicz and directed by Sean Mathias. [22] 2004 London West End revival [ edit ] This recent book by Julie James made me think of homemade salad dressing. It is not always the easiest to make; when everything blends together just so... allowing all the flavors to marry, the results are sublime. Vettriano's inspiration for the triptych came after watching footage for Formula 1 in that era. Speaking to The Telegraph about the work Vettriano said: I'm not normally a big fan of misunderstandings that seem to drag out unnecessarily so I was a little leery about this one. What makes it a standout is the snappy, witty repartee that had me often smiling and occasionally laughing out loud. When they're thrown together to work on Ford's sister's case, it provides the foundation for the relationship to turn and a sexy romance to brew. And, it introduces a secondary storyline that I found just as interesting.

Mrs.Venable tells us that Sebastian's fateful trip with Catharine, during which he failed to write a poem, took place in 1935. The play is set "between late summer and early fall" the following year. [5] New Perspectives" Stars! Lovers of smart, witty, self-independent heroines will not want to miss Suddenly One Summer. I loved the tension between this duo and the way that their strengths and weaknesses complemented one another. Being a lawyer myself, I could totally get how a legal professional--especially a divorce lawyer--could develop a jaded perspective towards HEAs. The inspiring message that even the most jaded of the jaded individuals are capable of falling into their own perfect match--even when they are wholeheartedly determined to run in the other direction--is a message that a romantic like me, just can't help but to fall in love with. Overall, if you are a fan of Julie James, I think you won’t be disappointed. Just know this one is a bit different from the FBI/ US Attorney series. I’m always excited when a new Julie James book rolls around because it means I’ll be reading about a smart heroine, some witty banter and a delicious hero. SUDDENLY ONE SUMMER has all of this all this there is something that feels a little different about this book as well. a b Gross, Robert F. (May 1995). JSTOR 3208485.When she first meets investigative journalist Ford Dixon during a night of drinks at a bar, she assumes Ford may just be the right guy to scratch that itch for at least one night. But when she later finds out he is her new next door neighbor, a man who seems to have an endless "cavalcade" of willing females to entertain him, Victoria's initial interest turns sour, leading to some rather feisty, spite filled interchanges. I loved this book and am looking forward to the other books in this series. This book is a mixture of mystery, suspense, romance and angels. Although everything was not tied up at the end, it is the first of a series. Yes, it would have be nice to have some questions answered but I didn't feel deprived. It just made me anxiously awaiting for the next book in the series, which doesn't come out until April 2010. Darn!!! Suddenly one Summer follows two groups of characters, Brianna and her family on their farm in Western Australia, and a detective in South Australia. The entire time there is something linking these two groups, but it is not until the last few chapters that things begin to fall into place and it all makes sense. Suddenly One Summer was a one of my favorite types of romances: hate that turns into begrudging like and admiration, eventually turning into unexpected love. With a lot of snarky, clever banter in between, of course!
