Even when enlarged, Ultra Max 400 Film delivers excellent sharpness and fine grain for crisp, clear pictures.

Though UltraMax’ grain is chunkier than Portra 400’s, it appears smoother as the individual granules aren’t as sharp. To understand more about the details above you can check out our film guide or if you want some inspiration then head over to our page on choosing your next film. The Kodak Kodacolor Ultra Max 400 GC Color Negative Film ISO 400, 35mm Size, 36 Exposure, 3-Pack is the ideal film for all conditions, and now gives brighter colours. I am team ultramax, though there were a few of your pix where the gold had bolder colors (maybe lower light? Read on for a summary of the community thoughts, recommendations and results with Kodak Ultramax 35mm!I guess I could get back low resolution files and if I like a photo then have just that one negative made high resolution to print big . There are two different options for Kodak Ultramax - you can choose between a 36 exposure roll or a 24 exposure roll.

Im definitely a fan of Ektar as well but as much of my shooting is done for camera testing, the economy makes Ultramax a winner. This is noticeably less than Portra 400’s 12 stops and somewhat less than the original/Japanese Fujifilm Superia X-Tra’s 13 stops . I just want to say that I absolutely love your writing, and I found the William Shakespeare bit amusing. Personally, I love both Ektar and Provia very much just as you were, but while using these films, I felt a lot of constrants. With considerable and easy availability, it can be processed almost anywhere and by its nature it will deliver consistent results. There’s also a new ISO 400 colour negative film made in Germany by ORWO that I’ve recently reviewed: Wolfen NC 500 . But remember that this is a 400 speed film; we should expect that it’s not going to be as smooth as Provia or Ektar. It’s a little grainer than Portra 400 (PGI 37) and a lot grainier than Ektar , which is less than PGI 25 — a threshold Kodak uses to describe grain no longer visible to the naked eye.

OK, if you are after the most perfect skin tones, and next to no grain, then it might be worth splashing out on the Portra range. Instead, they recruit groups of people to pass judgements based on various samples and quantify those surveys for various magnification factors. Jennifer Stamps is a toy camera and travel film photographer and a regular contributor for Shoot It With Film. Optimized colour precision technology provides consistently bright, vibrant colours with accurate skin-tone reproduction for natural-looking people pictures. In our opinion, this film is one of the best budget films and is great for beginners since it does so well with over exposure. The fact it is a more modern formula does also mean it is designed for the digital world including scanning. I have never shot film, and unfortunately given the current economic climate I am unlikely to be able to start, but I am absolutely loving this series of adventures! Like most Kodak, its warm tones make it good portrait film and it’s strong saturation works well for landscapes as sell. If you consider that you need to spend money on SD cards, power, computer stuff, software licenses, external file storage, web storage and all the time you invest sitting in front of Lightroom I rhink digital is way more expensive as a single role of film.

Our Kodak Ultramax 400 film review wraps up the 35mm films included in the Analogue WonderBox Film Subscription for October. I’ve always preferred the colors of Ultramax and have often wished that Kodak would make a professional version with a grain structure like Portra 400.I don’t know what is on each roll and if I have a good quality photo I want to digitally enlarged I have to pay for that enlargement of that digitally. I’ve successfully zipped it through the autofocus speed machine that is Nikon’s F4, and painstakingly ratcheted it across the film gate of an old-as-dirt Contax. Though not as fine-grained as those professional-level films, it’s certainly got enough resolving power to make sharp and smooth images. No matter where I’m going, what I’m shooting, or what camera I’m using, I know that when I load a roll of Ultramax I’m going to get as many good photos as my abilities allow.
