But with the weather coming in and the mountain peak looming, will this foursome make it back alive? Like why did we just start a new chapter with a whole half page of the lodge owner fixing a door at the lodge? I really enjoyed how The Hike blended a murder mystery that kept you guessing right until the end – the implication that there are, perhaps, even some supernatural elements at play added further to the tense atmosphere – with the natural development of each of the characters. Magary's second novel (after The Postmortal) features elements reminiscent of Homer's Odyssey, Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series, Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, and the PC game King's Quest. This really is an adventure which is going to test friendships and I felt how the story unfolded was the right way for the group, but not one I ever saw coming.

Then he’s kidnapped by a man-eating giantess named Fermona, who forces him to fight Rottweiler-men and dwarves in her gladiatorial arena. Ben ends up running away, stumbling upon a campsite among the trees, and suddenly he is in his twenties again, staring into the face of his old college girlfriend. Even though I wasn’t entirely sold on the writing style (just a personal thing), I ended up giving this one 4 stars simply because the thriller aspect of it was so good.In accordance with The Post Office, the last recommended date for Christmas posting is 18th December (2nd Class) and 20th December (First class). Our main characters - old school friends Maggie, Liz, Helena and Joni catch up each year for their annual one week away together to reconnect and catchup.

The Hike is a wonderful book that first caught my eye with its amazing front cover, just so inviting! If you’re looking for an entertaining popcorn thriller, albeit maybe not memorable or a chart topper, look no further! Regardless, we only recommend products or services we use personally and believe will add value to our readers. And waiting on the trail is someone who’d do anything to keep their secrets buried – and to stop the group walking away alive .

The atmosphere and scenery were made so visual that all my senses were alive with all the lovely, descriptive words and phrases where I felt I was an invisible party hiking alongside the women. Fast-paced and immensely entertaining, this is highly recommended for sf fans and adventurous literary readers. P. Putnam Sons" and Net galley for the opportunity to read this terrific book and any thoughts or opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone! En-route, I slept in rustic DNT cabins perched in some of the most remote spots I can imagine, hugely grateful for the warmth of a woodstove, and a bowl of steaming noodles enjoyed after a long day of walking. A quick, easy read imbued with plenty of foreboding, compelling yet complex group dynamics, and characters who will make you wonder who to trust, I just could not get enough of this one.

The Hike navigates tough terrain and luscious fjords, but it also navigates motherhood, envy, longing, how to grapple with your worst possible instincts. If I had to rank them from most to least likeable, I'd say: Maggie (hella wholesome), Helena (she got a huge character arc which was great to see), Liz (very type A, forced the women into a dangerous trip because SHE needed it, didn't really give AF how they felt) and Joni (no comment, see for yourself. It works reasonably well as a thriller plot in its own right but the book amounts to so much more than this. The tension runs like a tight thread throughout the narrative; but though we never forget the threats that surround the group, getting closer all the time, we are allowed moments of wonder.
