About this deal

I recognise that Legacy can be used with the base game once completed, so feel free to chime in and try to convince me to get Legacy instead of anything else if you strongly believe that is the best way to go. Your Mission has 3 parts: Hack the spaceships command gaining entry to the command module, steal an artefact token from the command module and then escape, finally, to accumulate enough points to beat fellow thieves. Moving throughout the spaceship can yield rewards, if you move over a space that has an Artifact you can pick it up, but you can only take one. I would expect the map and the deck building to work together, but this isn’t really a thing since your deck tends to just provide movement and occasionally some combat.

Long answer: Pulsarcade has moved to the top of the list of recommended expansions for those who love Clank! You and your fellow thieves have challenged each other to sneak around his ship and steal his most precious artefacts! Any player out of the game, either because they escaped or got knocked out, gets to pull cubes from the bag on their turn, like an extra attack.

The few changes they made to this version of the game really work to make the theme even more awesome. The modular board includes some double-sided tiles so you can configure the ship in a multitude of different ways so it never gets stale, and you can also download the free Renegade Game Studios app to play a campaign, which also includes a solo adventure mode. Clank in Space is a deck builder that pits you against your friends to see who can claim the most points by looting the ship and escaping alive. I like the dungeon theme slightly more than space, but that won’t strongly sway me one way or another. That said I have so much fun building my deck and just chatting about the game with other players during play that I don’t even mind the low interaction.

Every so often a game comes along that completely changes your attitudes to a genre or a game mechanic. I do also like the fact that the base game is relatively quick to play (for 4 of us, we can be done in about 70 minutes so we can even sneak games in on weekday evenings sometimes). It’s a really awesome idea to keep the replayability high and to be honest I think the art looks neater than the original Clank! The board setup is by far the longest because even after you get it assembled you have to place all the major and minor secret tokens and artifact tokens around all over the board. This being space and all, there are new teleport and elevator spaces that enable you to move more rapidly through the ship. I do feel the game is a bit more complicated than the original as well as there are new card mechanics to learn. While I think “Stumbles” are important to have and should be difficult to get rid of (if there is no chance of you generating Clank, then the game becomes too easy), decks get pretty large and unwieldy. One interesting addition to the game, once Commander Preon’s rage has increased to a certain level, are the Executive Escape Pods. You must place these cool little plastic data cube tokens on two different data hub spaces in two different sections of the ship to bring the force field down before you can proceed.

In addition to the Clank cubes, there are four Bounty Hunters (they are added to the Clank bag later for extra awfulness) and there’s also a Blockade token which we’ll get to in a bit, but I promise you it’s awful/awesome. Is not only the name of this series, it is also the literally-named mechanic that makes this series so fun. If someone takes a cheap artifact and leaves early, you might think you have the game in the bag if you stay and fill your pockets. So on every turn, players move throughout the ship using the movement cards, trying to obtain items to help them along the way. Many of them (like the Toxigenic Plague) refer to one of the new modules so you should definitely make sure that module is in play. Future plays of this will go back and forth between the base and the ship, and I don’t think I’ll ever play without at least one of these expansions, if not both.
