Description

I had to read “Linear Algebra and Its Applications” by David Lay for the Linear Algebra 1 class in my first semester in University. Lay is also co-author of several mathematics texts, including Introduction to Functional Analysis, with Angus E. I would recommend supplementing learnings from this book with materials that could allow for a better conceptual understanding of the constructs of the linear algebraic system, such as 3Blue1Brown's Essence of Linear Algebra YouTube video series. And I can add that it's a very handy reference to breeze through when you need to brush up on basics for a more advanced course that relies on this stuff.

Please Read Notes: Brand New, International Softcover Edition, Printed in black and white pages, minor self wear on the cover or pages, Sale restriction may be printed on the book, but Book name, contents, and author are exactly same as Hardcover Edition. The chapter on eigenvalues is relatively weak; it covers all the techniques, but the applications are limited to dynamical systems and the interest is in taking high powers of a matrix. Chapter 3 teaches about matrix operations such as matrix multiplication, matrix inversion and transposing matrices. He has made many contributions to mathematics education, including publishing seven mathematics textbooks and one monograph.

Linear Algebra is a crucial topic for understanding probability, quantum mechanics, and a whole slew of other topics in engineering and mathematics. In a flash of providential insight, young Gauss realized that the pairwise sums of numbers from both ends of the set (1+100, 2+99, 3+98) were each 101. It's readable, has lots of examples and a handful of problems, which cover both theory and practice. The mathematicians will probably dislike it due to its emphasis in applications and the lack of proofs. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages.I think though that a lot of its attempt to show the use of linear algebra for other topics or in practical application engages in a bit too much handwaving to enable us truly grasp what was going on.

Lay is also a coauthor of several mathematics texts, including Introduction to Functional Analysis with Angus E.Strang seemed like a very nice guy when I saw him speak, but his book is no match for Lay's in terms of doing awesome things like making wonderful lists of all the 50 different statements that mean the same thing (for example: determinant of matrix is nonzero <-> matrix has full rank <-> matrix's columns are linearly independent <-> etc. The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. But complaints aside, Strang is to be commended for focusing on the conceptual framework of linear algebra, with matrices as general linear operators, and eigenvalues/eigenvectors of matrix as fundamental properties of systems' dynamical evolution, instead of just throwing all the math at us and hoping that we can sort it out.

The book was in the condition described and the seller had taken time to package it well in cardboard and a jiffy bag so it was very well protected. On today's installment of "Rating my college textbooks because if I have to read them, they better count toward my Goodreads challenge! Written by a true master of the subject and explained in a way that even non-mathematicans can understand. The examples in the textbook made doing the homework a much easier process, and while I'm still confused on the point of linear algebra and much of how it works, this book did help me get a solid introduction, so I'll take it!

Although this textbook seems to be the sort of book that the Manga Guide to Linear Algebra was written in response to, but all the same it is worthwhile to note that this book does try--very hard--to demonstrate the practical importance of linear algebra even if its approach is not very interesting and even if its style is particularly leaden. For visual leaner, I definitely recommend awesome videos about linear algebra by 3Blue1Brown , https://www. It is one thing to know that there are many ways to use a subject and many jobs where a given subject comes in handy, but it is an entirely different thing to be filled with a degree of passion and enthusiasm to solve particular problems in the world today through mastery of a technical field like linear algebra. So in my opinion, it would make a great start for those who begin to learn linear algebra or want to refresh their understanding after a long time not using it. He teaches Introduction to Linear Algebra and Computational Science and Engineering and his lectures are freely available through MIT OpenCourseWare.
