Description

Technique: between two consonants you often have to have a vowel; there aren't very many vowels so this is a useful constraint.

If you use clues on your first time through, your monthly score for the puzzle will be lower than your best daily score. There aren't a lot of posibilities for this; I see DAZED, FAZED, LAZED, RAZED; maybe FUZED in American English (but this is a UK newspaper so probably not). From there, your first priority is to get the common letters out of the way, in particular, the vowels.

With the puzzle I'm using as an example (I'm deliberately not linking to it because (1) I don't know whether it will be available online for ever and (2) the approach is the important thing rather than these details), if I enter the A and E, the next interesting things I find are D----EED, which seems like it should be very informative but nothing springs instantly to mind, and D-A-. If you enjoy word puzzles, the Codeword casual game by Arkadium will be an enjoyable break in your day. Suffixes will be of some use, though, and solvers should be aware that, for example, if a word ends in g, the preceding two letters might be i and n. The puzzles have the right features to suit different moods and abilities which make them a great pleasure to play. I think usually there is at least one word in the grid that (1) has one or more letters that are already known at the start and (2) has repeated instances of some other letter or letters that narrow down its options. We’ve got you going with a couple of combinations, so all you need to do is start linking the other letters and corresponding numbers and your words will start flowing.

Starters should offer a way into the puzzle, but not give away so much information that the puzzle becomes a mundane square-filling exercise. Many players find this game to be a relaxing alternative to the frustrations of obscure crossword clues. A number of letters have been decoded to help with the identification of other letters and words in the grid.Pick whichever guess you were least confident about, and undo it or, probably better, replace it with your next-most-likely guess and see what happens. Since we expect e to be the most common letter, appearing 12% of the time, we could reasonably guess that 15=e.
