About this deal

Malik and Karina, neither knowing who the other is, end up hiding together in an abandoned building and having a bit of a connection. Lauren Sheehan-Clark in a review for The Daily Californian noted that it incorporates many fantasy tropes "while also breathing new life into a repetitive genre". It comes to light that though Karina has repressed both the memories and her magic (causing her migraines), she has powerful storm magic and summoned the bolt of lightening that caused the fire that killed her father and sister. Malik says he’ll do anything in exchange for her release, so Idir says he must kill Karina, the crown princess of Ziran, before the end of Solstasia.

After admitting that her mother is dead, Karina enlists Afua’s help with the eventual ritual that needs to happen. Now that he was seeing Karina up close, mistaking her for a servant felt like having mistaken the sun for a candle. Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). A refugee escaping his crumbling war-torn home alongside his sisters, seeking a better life in the very city that wreaked havoc on his country - only for a dangerous spirit to steal his younger sister and trap him in an impossible deal.

Add to this some plotting to overthrow Karina and take control of the city, some betrayal, and a lot of folklore and storytelling. Now because this book is written by a woman from Ghana and I am a white woman, it is very possible that I only struggled due to my ignorance of African culture, so that is certainly on me rather than on the author. But this does not kill Karina, it only frees Idir from his prison realm and breaks the barrier that protects Ziran, and darkness briefly falls over Ziran as Idir disapears, but not before revealing that he (nor anything crafted by him like the blade he gave Malik) can kill her because she’s his descendant. I WAS PROMISED ENEMIES TO LOVERS BUT THEY DIDN'T EVEN MEET UNTIL 50% I GOT 25% OF ‘ENEMIES TO LOVERS AND THERE WAS HARDLY ANY TENSION I AM MADDDDDD. She had really wanted Driss to win because she really didn’t like him, but he was already dead before marrying her.

Hyena, the trickster figure of Sonande’s culture, reminded me in many ways of Anansi, and the story that Malik tells of one of Hyena’s adventures is largely reminiscent of the humorous tales that often go along with Anansi stories. duh) I did find the fact that both Karina and Malik were planning on killing the other each for their own reasons to be a very nice touch. He’s the “man” of the family, but he suffers from panic attacks and cries at multiple times throughout the story.

Regardless of who had her mother killed, none of it will matter if she can manage to bring her back, so she sets about trying to find someone who can help her learn more about magic.Though it seems Malik and Karina are destined to kill one another, their stories become tangled and complicated as they cross paths and learn more about one another. The romance is quite predictable (the whole ''I need to kill you but somehow I find myself attracted to you'') but I honestly could not get into the whole romance thing because Malik behaves and thinks like he is 13 or 14 years old. Brown has admitted to using Ghanaian folk tales as an inspiration for her book, this story isn’t really a fairy tale or folk tale retelling.
