About this deal

Oddly enough, academia and peer(pressure) groups didn’t find Burroughs to be a problem at that time.

A few times, generous people who admire his writings will allow him to stay with them rent free, though he does not understand why people enjoy his writings so much. At times, you could even say this read is entertaining, but what it is all the time, is disturbingly honest, ugly – real. As with anything written by Bukowski, I wouldn't recommend it to you if you're easily offended or overtly PC. My original review did not emphasize enough the amount of pain Bukowski probably brought into the world through his actions. What I enjoyed the most about this book was the ending and not just because I could finally put the book down for good, but because of its optimism. The cold and measured cruelty of the American hospitals is not caused by doctors who are overworked or who have gotten used to and bored with death. However, he does mention that he does not want readers to feel sorry for him, which is why he includes crude comedy along with each story. Which makes the book weirdly enjoyable, because it is so damn uncensored and raw, a blend of honesty and bat-shit crazy that makes a brilliant read. It begins during his early childhood by explaining the difficult relationship that he had with his father. I get very tired of the precious intellects who must speak diamonds every time they open their mouths. Like South of No North, this book has its ups and downs, although I like Notes of a Dirty Old Man slightly better for several reasons. However, his alcoholism is not an issue that Bukowski wishes to change; it is simply a way of life for him. The long backstories that leads to the phrase “I once lost a million dollar to a Japanese fisherman” or “eating a small animal with a tiny asshole” or “cold shit, warm shit, it’s still shit” are some of the standouts.I wouldn't describe his work as realism only as a type of "subjective realism" where the truth of the matter is only true for him. I find it extremely difficult to rate this read, it is not your traditional novel, I cannot even recommend it, simply because I don’t believe a lot of people will understand what it was meant to serve. Some areas extremely violent, vulgar and vaguely mysogonistic but very interesting and honest regardless.
