When there's still no sign of the elusive engagement ring, Ais worries that she's never going to have her own Big Day - so she decides it's time for a change.

This reminded me of her stories, with the family and the humour particularly, but the bite of bittersweet also reminded me of her books. I've smiled and giggled my way through, empathised with Aisling so many times and yes, shed a tear or two with her as well.

It begins with the wedding of Liam and Denise, and Aisling reflects on how so many women she knows have achieved the status of wife, and even motherhood, the normal expectations of a woman in the small rural community of Ballygobbard.

But Aisling, never one to worry about having too much on her plate, rolls up her sleeves: she's got this. The book goes in heavy on the Irishness at the start – and from reading other Netgalley reviews, I think that’s put some people off, as they just didn’t get it at all – but I’m not one for giving up – so persevered, and I’m glad I did as the story develops a lot more and you get to know Aisling and her family and friends much better.

I saw the wonderful Marian Keyes recommend this book on Twitter (it’s already been published in Ireland – where it’s set) and then found it was to be published in the UK in May – and so I could download an advanced review copy from Netgalley – so that I did! The word 'Aisling' seems to be a term originally coined in an Irish Facebook group set up by Emer and Sarah, which has amassed many members who discuss the things they've noticed and observed about a certain type of Irish girl, known as an 'Aisling'. This book is full on Irish dialogue right from the get go, I honestly had to read the opening sentence three times before I understood what it meant. We were very excited to get a Chinese takeaway in 2001 but were upstaged just a short while later when a gang of Brazilians moved to Knocknamanagh. Overall, I'm giving Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling 5 out of 5 and adding it to my five-star favourites shelf! She is bought to life here by the authors, a novel that has its origins in a Facebook page that documented and captured the varied traits attributed to an Aisling. Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling is set to ‘ramp up’ for its fifth and final book, as the authors said they want to end on a high.

I can't tell you about the plot because I didn't read enough to know what the plot was about -although I was already concerned about her father's appearance - my apologies. She wants out of her parents’ house, although she’d miss Mammy turning on the electric blanket like clockwork and Daddy taking her car 'out for a spin' and bringing it back full of petrol. Emer McLysaght is the former editor of The Daily Edge and has worked extensively in journalism and radio. I didn't know this before I read the novel, so it's not essential information, but I found it interesting that Aisling is a (seemingly fond, not cruel) term for a certain type of girl - and what an amusing character this novel's Aisling is!So (to quote Monty Python) even though this book makes you look on the bright side of life, it reminds us that sometimes life is a piece of shit, when you look at it. For anyone who hasn't been inducted into the wonderful world of OMGWACA (I am eternally grateful to my sister for bringing me into the fold), it's an Irish Facebook group with over (checks Facebook) 42 thousand members. It is also poignant, and having lost my father suddenly five years ago, and lived through some of the thoughts and scenes described, I found that part of the story too real – it was like being back in the hospital again, being told that there was no hope, that it could be weeks or even days (it was barely 36 hours), and fighting so hard to keep it all together instead of breaking down both then and at the funeral. If you're not Irish you won't get most of the book and I am certain it won't be relevant in ten years time. We are a bag of emotions,” Sarah said, and admitted they have been struggling to sleep in the run up to the big day.
