First off, I want to talk about how people always hail Fangirl as the book they related to going into college, but I think Radio Silence does everything Fangirl does, but a million times better and more relatable. It made me happy that they eventually managed to speak about it and I hope that one day they’ll reach the moment when they’ll both feel comfortable enough to show the world. its by Alice Oseman who wrote the heart stopper series as well, so I am confident this will be amazing as well. And these five characters come together in this book and create something so beautiful that I don’t even have words for it.

So when the fragile trust between them is broken, Frances is caught between who she was and who she longs to be. She doesn't get in, and she feels like all the work she's put in to get to this point has been for nothing and that her entire life has been a waste. I really felt while reading it that she uniquely understood the subject and that having a someone who had been gone from high school for too much longer wouldn't have felt so authentic. As an author it’s not easy to capture the voice of a generation but I think Oseman did it masterfully. What I’m trying to say is that this book is timeless because it speaks to every teenager and young adult that ever went through adolescence. You let them put up posters, you let them scribble poetry on a white board, you idk give them room to breathe and to be who they are! They manage to find his room and Frances goes in alone so they don't overwhelm him and she finds the room in an absolute mess with piles of hate-mail on his desk from fans who are angry at him for ending Universe City.

The beautiful and light parts, the really ugly and dark parts, the comfortable parts, the hard parts, the selfish parts, the selfless parts, all the realistic parts. I have got one most hateful parent character (Aled's mother) and one of the most strong, lovely single parent character (Frances' mom). It's the Christmas holiday so she goes over to Aled's house across the street to see when he's coming home for Christmas, but his mum informs her that he's decided to stay at the university over the break, then shows Frances up to Aled's room, which she has stripped of all its decoration and all the things that made the room feel like Aled's, which Frances is horrified by. This book missed the mark for me, but also helped me solidify the fact that I don't think I enjoy fandom books anymore. Various important themes regarding lgbt, mental health, academic choices, physical and emotional abuse, friendship, social anxiety issues, how social media affects the ones who are handling them have been represented so well. She keeps listening to Universe City until one day at the end of January, Aled posts the final Universe City episode with the title "Goodbye" which is just nothing but white noise. The novel begins when one day, Frances receives a message from the creator of Universe City asking her to become the new Universe City artist.

I don’t think you deserve to,” said Carys, and I could feel the inaudible gasps of everyone in the room. And everyone treats each other sh*ttily (I love making the word sh*t into an adverb) and do things that people would just like, never do.in fact, I bought a load of Alice Oseman stories when I started reading the Heartstopper: Volume One series back in 2020, pre Covid. She was the total opposite of Aled’s mum and I really liked that parents weren’t just mentioned as a footnote in “Radio Silence” but actually were a part of their children’s lives! Also, I just wanted to mention that this book had so many great recommendations for music artists (London Grammar, Nero, Madeon. Thankfully Frances could persuade her to seek him out and the moment she realized her mother was destroying Aled she became the lioness I wanted her to be!

Anyway, rant aside, I don’t see enough good friendship stories around, and ‘Radio Silence’ satisfies my need for one. I hope we’ll see more of her in other books but I’m not sure she’s going to be in one of the others?Alice Oseman so delicately and personally delivers a story about enjoying creativity and seeing life as having more options than solely "go to University. i felt myself remembering some of that "what am i going to do with my life" angst that i had back then but it's hard to truly relate 5 years later.
