Description

After his wife's death and the collapse of his newspaper, David Harwood has no choice but to uproot his nine-year-old son and move back into his childhood home in Promise Falls, New York. I have to admit that I was able to guess a few of the big twists but I found enough surprises along the way to keep my interest. Was so engrossed, purchased the audiobook, narrated by Quincy Dunn Baker and Brian O'Neil in addition to the e-book for a suspenseful performance. This is the start of an exciting unraveling of events, with David, Detective Barry Duckworth, the ex mayor and numerous other characters coming into the mix. Don't take me wrong I love books with lots of descriptions and when it takes time for events to happen and long chapters too.

An ominous abandoned Ferris wheel seems to stand as a warning that something dark has infected Promise Falls. After losing his wife five years earlier, David Harwood has uprooted his son from Boston to his home town and the more manageable hours as a reporter on the Promise Falls Standard, temporarily living with his parents. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! I have all three parts of this Promise Falls trilogy and I won't be stopping reading until I have finished all three. When dropping off a food parcel from his mother, David finds blood smeared on the front door and Marla curled up with a baby in the bedroom! It didn't feel quite up to par of his past writing in the sense that there seemed to be a bit extra padding at times, but I'm chalking that up to a need to set up for the remaining books.

When the baby's real mother is found murdered, David can't help wanting to piece together what happened--even if it means proving his own cousin's guilt. An unemployed single father, without a place of his own to reside and not getting any younger he is a great catch as father, Don, is quick to point out. Some female students at a local college have been the subject of attacks, and someone has killed and hung a large group of squirrels on display in one of the local parks.
