They should never ever be used on a public road as the risk is too great that the dog could run out into the road. The webbing and the housing will virtually last for ever but sadly not the spring which is the only reason we have needed to nuy new leads but that said it has only been 3 in over 40 years. She cannot come off lead because of high prey drive so this allows her the freedom to explore, sniff and just enjoy herself. This flexi Giant neon 8m one jumped out from all the ones on offer mainly due it’s colorful ribbon and extra 3m length. So wanted something long and good quality so he would enjoy his walks moreI have the large jack Russel type and even though I am only useing it for a jack Russel he can run at full speed and as the lead reaches the end of it length as yanks him back on his harness you can just feel its safe and not going to break. The tape does tend to twist as it retracts more than any Flexi I’ve used before, but thanks to the open spool it’s easy to see when the tape needs adjusting. it is also robust even when the tape is weakened, whilst i wasn't looking my dog chewed a 100mm section that ended up peppered with teeth holes, but it still didn't fail when the dog was pulling or giving it a shock test. The one thing i will finally say is that this lead is really heavy so be prepared for the weight of carrying it around, its too big to sit in a pocket too, i have a walking belt and mine sits on a carabiner which is much easier to handle. The almost luminous quality of the lead makes it standout at night, which is a nice safety feature, and being flat is easy to keep clean. There is no way in hell this lead will snap unless the integrity has been damaged by a cut into the material.I’d also mention that having 10 metres of freedom for my dogs is great, but in truth it's more than I think they would ever need, and the 8-metre version (which is slightly smaller and lighter) would probably have been better for me. The handle is strong and has a rubberised grip and if the webbing gets wet it is easy to pull out, lock open so it can dry. The test of time will be the clincher, but, so far, I love it and I resisted for ages as I didn't want to luge around a great clumping device on my walks.
