In 2011, Elijah Craig 20 Year Old Single Barrel (Barrel #3735) was named by Whisky Advocate magazine as "American Whiskey of the Year". [15] According to Heaven Hill the Elijah Craig Small Batch bourbon is made from batches of 200 barrels, or less, and is named after the supposed creator of bourbon as we know it. The tale, in a nutshell, is that Reverend Elijah Craig was a moonshiner and one day there was a fire. Some of his barrels got charred in that fire, but were still able to hold his moonshine. After realizing what charring a barrel did for the whiskey he began doing it on purpose and thus invented bourbon. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Elijah Craig’s award-winning Bourbon is going to further elevate the spectator experience in Rome, and their new limited edition bottle will both taste incredible and become a sought-after souvenir commemorating the greatest team contest in golf,” says Ryder Cup Director, Guy Kinnings.

Like its confusing terminology cousin “single barrel,” the term “small batch” first came to usage courtesy of famed Jim Beam distiller Booker Noe. And while the honor system is a big deal among distillers, small batch is not a legally regulated term in bourbon production. On September 29, 2016, Heaven Hill announced a redesign of the Elijah Craig Small Batch and Small Batch Barrel Proof offerings. [10] Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie. Elijah Craig Small Batch Barrel Proof releases #12 (old label, left bottle) and #14 (new label, right bottle). Release No.European oak, with its ability to integrate flavors subtly and softly, effortlessly balances the sweetness and spiciness of the Lazio-inspired toast profile with the elevated character of our fully-matured Bourbon. This edition leads with a nose of caramel and crème brûlée and once tasted, bright fruit notes burst onto the palate after initial notes of baking spices. The finish is moderately long and is dominated by spice. Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon is named after Elijah Craig, who is said to be the Father of Bourbon. There’s A Lot Of Information On The Elijah Craig Small Batch Bottle Single Barrel: A bourbon made using single barrels, providing a higher range of variation in flavor and the chance at specific, unique characteristics.

A single barrel variant of Elijah Craig is currently available in 18- and 23-year old bottlings. Heaven Hill has offered a single barrel version of Elijah Craig carrying 20, 21, and 22 year old age statements as well.Granted, the label of Elijah Craig Small Batch says otherwise. But Elijah Craig is better described as among the fathers of bourbon whiskey, since there were other distillers in Craig’s time doing much the same thing. He did, however, have a pivotal impact on bourbon whiskey production. Craig is credited as the first to use charred oak barrels. Smelling the Elijah Craig Small Batch next to both the age-stated and a 12 yo single barrel there is a noticable drop in richness and complexity. The palate follow suite with the noticeable difference in richness and the peanut quality is more pronounced in the SMB than the 12s. It’s still a good bourbon, but there is a noticeable difference between it and the 12, but there’s no use crying about it because them’s the breaks and this is the time we live in. High Rye: A bourbon with a higher than normal percentage of mash bill made up of rye (as opposed to using more corn, wheat, or barley, the other main grains used in bourbon mash). This tends to produce spicier flavors in the bourbon. Proof: The amount of alcohol in the whiskey, displayed as double that of the alcohol percentage. E.g., bourbon containing 50 percent alcohol is labeled as 100 proof. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. Like Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig’s mash bill is higher in corn proportion, at about 78 percent corn and 10 to 12 percent rye and malted barley. By law, bourbon must be 51 percent corn, with the rest of the necessary starch coming from grains like rye, wheat, and malted barley. Higher corn proportion can mean a smooth, slightly sweeter whiskey with a soft sweetness but a broader heat. Aging tends to be where higher corn whiskies gain their gravitas, threading char and oak lactones into the body of the whiskey; hence Elijah Craig’s baseline bottle is aged eight to 12 years. Elijah Craig claims the oldest single-barrel bourbon on the market. The nose is fairly sweet, with sweet cherry candy, brown sugar and simple sugar syrup, but also noticeable oak and light smoke. The bouquet is full, somewhat more so than might be expected for the proof. The flavors continue into the taste, with sweetness at the forefront. It’s a simple syrup sweetness, with both the sweetness and syrup components present. The oak and char remain noticeable throughout and last well into the finish. As the sweetness subsides a bit, white pepper spice grows. Elijah Craig Small Batch is a fairly full bodied bourbon for the proof. I’ve Had Elijah Craig Small Batch Many Times Before Oaky, nutty, dried corn, caramel, nutmeg, and a light bit of mint. Like the aroma, the palate is also a solid example of a decent bourbon.
