Secondly; there is a lot of sadness in this story. Sad people, sad conditions, sad introductory chapter. Most of all, as I mentioned above, an innocent dog is killed. I know that may not be an issue for some people, but I found it really upsetting to read. In the past I have found these books somewhat uplifting. They carry adrenalin throughout, but always end well, with a pleasant result. This ending was entirely melancholy and left me feeling very down. Looking for your next unputdownable mystery? (Their Lost Daughters is by far the best to date) However perhaps I am just being sensitive. To those who do not get so attached to the characters (and their pets), I'm sure this would be enjoyable.

The story is written beautifully, I simply found the plot wrong. I expected the ending extremely early on (as in, within the first 30 minutes), and while it was executed wonderfully - and I truly did enjoy reading it - the storyline itself felt rough and not as well thought-out as the other books. What I love about Ellis is you tend to root for all the characters. This is key because I got really mad towards the end … and then while sorting my thoughts on it I felt like I crashed head first into the ending.

The narration was slow so I switched to reading the book instead. (This says quite a bit about me wanting to push through this store to find out what happened next because it’s narrated by my FAVE narrator and I ditched him lol) Opening with a exhilarating,breath taking epilogue and having a sad,heart breaking ending this is a well written police procedural that has a hint of the supernatural to it.Although I enjoyed this book I didn't think it was as gripping as Their Lost Daughters.I thought it was too obvious who was Behind both the stalking of Superintendent Ruth Crooke`s niece and the disappearance of Suzanne Holland.Nothing unexpected happened,there where no jaw dropping twists or revelations.I think that the Cannon family angle could have been incorporated into the story more and used to add more intregue and threat to the story. I did however learn some interesting facts about blood splatter and brain injuries. The pub itself is very nice. Big and open with a high ceiling, and the women working was very pleasant.
