Creative Play

Lantern men used to lure unsuspecting travellers to their death. They would shine a light to lost travellers, and rather than showing them the way home, they would lure them to their death in the bed of reeds. The case in this book is excellent; Griffiths is an expert at tying together murders in the past with those in the present, and that happens here. It kept me guessing, and it's great that's it's so often Ruth's intelligence--not just Nelson's brawn--that helps resolve things. There are some strong twists that keep things moving as well. When Joseph failed to return home, or show up to work the following morning, a search of the marshes was carried out. Can it really have been 12 books, and 10 years of Ruth's life pining away for Nelson? I first fell in love with Ruth, a forensic archaeologists, by her forward thinking, completely genuine, intelligent, yet self-deprecating attitude. But I'm tired of waiting for the Nelson drama to fix itself. Their simmering passions, and in earlier books, their frantic coupling (that produce their daughter while Nelson was married), have turned into a soap opera and I'm done wondering when they'll either realize they are perfectly imperfect together, or let the whole thing go, and be happy in other relationships. There’s so much going on in The Lantern Men, both in plain view and below the surface. We have a great mystery to solve, in some stunning scenery, accompanied by characters who have become friends. But there’s always a nagging doubt about Ruth and Nelson, and that plays a huge part too. Both appear perfectly happy with the way things have panned out, but as we crime lovers know, appearances can be mighty deceptive. I’m not sure I can wait another year for the next instalment of this compelling tale.

Christmas Gifts

In our book group the British author Elly Griffiths has many fans, for both her Magic Men and Ruth Galloway series. So we were really happy to get enough copies of this to introduce her to people in our group who’d never read her books before. No traces of the 38-year-old were found. Joseph's body finally washed up on the banks of the River Yare three days later. I received a copy of this book from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Netgalley in return for an unbiased review. If anything, these books keep getting better and better. That is unusual in mystery series books, in my experience.
