About this deal

In a 2011 interview with a New Zealand radio station, Eldritch said Doktor Avalanche was now a MacBook Pro laptop running Steinberg Cubase. Or so they say. But if it were me, I wouldn’t have felt the need to tell anybody about it. I would just have had a lovely private bonfire. And maybe there have been times in my career where, effectively, I’ve done just that.

At the end of 1980, the single "Damage Done/Watch/Home of the Hit-men", was recorded and released. [9] On the single Marx played guitar through a practice amplifier and Eldritch was on drums that he had bought from Langford. [8] The duo each wrote and sang on a song: Eldritch on "Damage Done", Marx on "Watch". [9] The band name was influenced by Robert Altman's film McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), which featured the Leonard Cohen song "Sisters of Mercy" from his album Songs of Leonard Cohen, "because [calling ourselves] the Captains of Industry wouldn't have been as funny". Shortly after the last gig Eldritch relocated to Hamburg, where he was soon joined by Hussey. Their intention was to begin working on a follow-up album, tentatively titled Left on Mission and Revenge. Hussey had several written songs for the album, including "Dance on Glass" and "Garden of Delight". Demo versions of both songs featuring Eldritch on vocals have since surfaced, suggesting the band did work on the material in unison. I wanted somebody to play the bass and I’d seen her with The Gun Club. I was a big fan of that band. Patricia Morrison Biography". patriciamorrison.co.uk. Yeah, we might just use one loop from a song and build everything on top of that. Andrew was really creative. I guess the deal was that there had been a band, Sisters Of Mercy, and they broke up. Andrew said, "I'm gonna keep the name." And the rest of them said, "No, we're keeping it."

This Corrosion” was ultimately featured on the second studio album from The Sisters of Mercy, and the band pared down to the core two-piece of Andrew Eldritch and Patricia Morrison, creating a record that re-defined the sound The Sisters of Mercy stood for. While the lyrics are ostensibly an indictment of the George H. W. Bush administration, I'm more charmed by non-sequiturs like " Here come the golden oldies, here come the Hezbollah" from Doctor Jeep or " Long distance information just tell me where the manholes steam" from Detonation Boulevard. For a time there was some division in the band whether or not the Doktor should be moved to a Mac running Logic or remain as is. [31] Bonner, Michael (September 2006). "Floodland". Uncut. People thought that with the second album we were completely Steinman-ised, but it’s untrue. This Corrosion is ridiculous. It’s supposed to be ridiculous. It’s a song about ridiculousness. So I called Steinman and explained that we needed something that sounded like a disco party run by the Borgias. And that’s what we got. Children of Nuggets : Original Artyfacts from the Second Psychedelic Era 1976-1995 CD 3-CD 4 V.A (1) Hussey and Adams went on to form a new group called the Sisterhood. Their setlists featured songs Hussey had intended for the Sisters of Mercy; he would later record and release many of them with his new group. Meanwhile, Eldritch protested against their usage of the Sisterhood name as too similar to the Sisters of Mercy and the name of his band's fan community. In an attempt to stop Hussey's band Eldritch released the single "Giving Ground" by his own band, the Sisterhood. The single was later followed by the album Gift. Hussey's band eventually christened themselves the Mission. Hussey has since expressed regret about the entire incident. I realise that Vision Thing may sound too assembled and artificial for some listeners. On paper, I would have thought I was one of those listeners but Vision Thing remains one of my favorite albums of the past 30+ years. It also took me a while to realise that the Sisters of Mercy are basically Andrew Eldritch and whoever he wanted to work with at the time. The only other consistent "band member" is the aforementioned drum machine, Doktor Avalanche. Eldritch does a great job of gathering the right people to get the sound he wants, even if the "people" are sometimes drum machines and sequencers. In the Wikipedia entry from the album, bassist Tony James is quoted as saying it took about "20 minutes" to record his bass parts. I only previously knew Tony James from Generation X and 80s oddities Sigue Sigue Sputnik, so that seems to fit.

The music press reported the break-up of the band on 2 November 1985, announcing that "the Sisters of Mercy were down to singer Andrew Eldritch and his faithful drum machine [ Doktor Avalanche] this week after guitarist Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams left the band. Although this has scuppered recording plans for a new album this month, Andrew now intends to record the same album in the New Year and could well be using Wayne as a session guitarist. [...] Andrew has also approached former Gun Club bassist Patricia Morrison—now in Fur Bible—to play on the album, but it's not yet known whether Andrew will continue with the name Sisters of Mercy." [5] Eldritch had no intention to carry on under the disformed band's name, as members who left to form the Mission had an agreement with him that the name the Sisters of Mercy would be used by no one after the break-up.
