Below, I share my opinions and short review of each of these brands along with several factors to consider before purchasing student grade watercolors. So let's dive into the showdown!

Ask five watercolor artists which brand they recommend and you’ll probably get five different answers!A comprehensive catalogue by Emeritus Professor David Hill of The University of Leeds, covering the entire Leeds collection of Cotman sketches and watercolours, together with one oil painting. Both Cotman and Artists' Water Colours can be freely intermixed. If long term permanence is required with Cotman, use only colours rated AA or A which are recommended as permanent for artists' use. The three primary colours in Cotman Water Colour are Lemon Yellow Hue, Ultramarine and Permanent Rose. If using a six colour mixing system we would recommend Lemon Yellow Hue, Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue, Ultramarine, Intense Blue, Permanent Rose and Cadmium Red Hue. Blending with these colors is easy, but the effect is a little simple. Unlike with richer liquid watercolors that come in a tube, the blending is subtle and, well, watered down. I couldn’t achieve a good vibrant blend with this palette. The effect does end up being a bit one-dimensional.

Welcome to the catalogue and archive of John Sell Cotman at Leeds Art Gallery. Cotman is one of Britain’s most important artists and known worldwide for his watercolours and drawings. Leeds has one of the best collections of his work, including some of his finest watercolours and an unrivalled number of his sketchbook drawings. Winsor & Newton is a high-quality art and craft supplies company. Cotman is a lower-priced line of products made by the same company. The main difference between the two is the quality of materials used and the price. Winsor & Newton products are made with better quality materials and are more expensive. Cotman products are made with lower quality materials and are less expensive. The sketches were collected by Leeds architect Sydney D Kitson and bequeathed by him to Leeds. Kitson devoted his retirement to researching Cotman’s life and work and in 1937 published ‘The Life of John Sell Cotman’. Kitson also gave Leeds his archive of notebooks, correspondence and research materials. He called it ‘Cotmania’. As water colour films are so thin all colours appear more or less transparent when painted onto paper. The pigments used in Cotman are also predominantly transparent. Warm Blue – French Ultramarine: PB29 (Transparent & single pigment). This hue also counts as a blue-violet, almost purple color. The pigment used for French Ultramarine is quite granular but it’s also a very stable, single pigment, warm blue. The principal development and catalogue work was begun in 2013 and was completed at the end of 2017. For a start, not all brands of paint are available in pans. So if you’re keen on trying some M. Graham paints for example, you simply can’t buy them in pans! Traditionally the white of the paper provides the brilliance to water colour and can be used as highlights. However, some artists utilise Chinese White for highlights at the end of their painting or in dulling some colour mixtures down. The range of 40 colours are chosen according to mass tone (colour from tube), undertone (bias of colour when in a thin film), colour strength, relative opacity and the character of the pigment itself. The resultant colour spectrum ensures the largest number of colours can be mixed. La Petite watercolors rewet easily and flow really well but are highly variable;some colors are extremely weak (like Burnt Umber and Cobalt Blue Hue)and some are extremely strong (like Deep Green and Primary Blue). Most of the colors are nicely transparent, but for some odd reason I had a difficult time cleaning Sennelier watercolors from my brushes.

The modern organic pigments, e.g. Cotman hue colours, are made of very fine particles which cause them to stain the paper. The traditional colours e.g. earths, tend to lift from the paper more easily. An extensive conservation programme, including preservation of Kitson's original mounting, new mounts for watercolours, and modern standards of storage and preservation for all Cotman's artworks and archive. The range consists of 40 colours in tubes and pans which possess good transparency, excellent tinting strength and good working properties. There are also a number of excellent water colour sets available in the Cotman range. These are the foundation of your mixing palette – start here. Note that I have more than one primary color in my palette for wider mixing choices. As water colour films are so thin all colours appear more or less transparent when painted onto paper. The pigments used in Cotman are also predominantly transparent. Granulation P.S. If you're interested in Cotman, the travel bag is really nifty and a great set for beginners, travel sketchers, and nature journalist . Several watercolor manufacturers produce two lines of paints—a student series alongside their more expensive and usually more extensive line of professional or artist paints. I've long been curious about the differences between the two, so I thought it was time to put student grade watercolor brands to the test and compare several affordable sets. Of course, the only one who knows what will work for you is YOU, but when it comes to student versus artist grade watercolors, there are several things to consider.

The Cotman Water Colour range has a more uniform consistency than the Artists' Water Colour range and this benefits beginners as there is less to learn about each individual pigment. The Cotman Water Colour range also relates to the Winsor & Newton Artists' Water Colour range, e.g. Burnt Sienna in both ranges has the same hue. This enables artists to use colours from both ranges with minimal adjustment to their technique. Upgrading to our Artists' Water Colour range means that you will have a much wider and balanced spectrum of colours to choose from, giving you the widest choice of pigmentsas well as unparalleled brilliance of colour and transparency. W Both paints have completely different functions, with the exception of Reeve’s Student Grade and Winsor Newton’s Artist Grade. Artist grade colors have a faster light speed than their standard grade counterparts. If you intend on going pro, you should think about using this medium. So to reduce the price, paint manufacturers use less pigment or cheaper versions which simulate true pigments but have lower manufacturing costs. Yep… It’s the pigments that cost money. When you select your paints, the characteristics you need to take into consideration are the following:Beyond pigment, a paint’s texture can make a big difference—some are creamier than others and easier to blend with water. The texture can also affect how the paint goes on the canvas (or any other material). McEnaney adds that most watercolor artists like a brush that comes to a really nice point, as well as flat brushes that will come in different sizes. "A good brush holds a lot of water, so you're not dipping it all the time," she says. The distillation of petroleum yields an ever widening range of organic pigments which are often termed as 'modern'. Many of the pigments used in Cotman are organic. Colour Range Is it true that girls get to wear the uniform of winsor schools? Girls do not wear uniforms on a regular basis. The dress code is extremely liberal, requiring all girls to dress in neat, clean clothes. At all times, we are expected to wear shoes. Cotman Watercolors
