I'm not happy with the use of the ICB. I truly don't believe that a child needs a simplified version. It is our responsibility as parents to teach our children about God. it can lead to wonderful places when you discuss the meaning of words and concepts that you encounter in the Bible that a child doesn't understand. A conversation about what Bible version is appropriate is hugely controversial, of this I am aware. This is a review, so I'm sharing my thoughts. My children and I have chosen to look up the scripture in our personal bibles, which happen to be the English Standard Version (ESV). The kids rotate who looks up the scripture of the day. My boys and I loved the 1st one of these, and they liked this one ok (one son more than the other), but this one kinda grated on me. It seemed far more preachy than the first. “Well it is a devotional” I hear you saying. True, but let me explain. The first one seemed to have neat little science lessons and tied them together with a simple little message about the glory of God. No doctrine, no questionable or controversial topics. This one had a few lessons that seemed a bit more personal, less universal. The 3rd lesson requires a literal reading of the Bible. There was #74 in particular about Satan hunting you (“That’s because a predator is hunting you, and his name is Satan.”) that I just don’t believe in and changed when reading.
