About this deal

Animal cultures are made through language and behaviour. We are disconnected from the Earth. There is an air-gap between each of us. This is why we can go a long time before we notice that a neighbour has a problem. Wohlleben reminds us that trees, like animals, have their own culture and intelligence. There is one massive difference though … and this was a ‘wow’ moment I got from reading The Power of Trees.

Augeri’s work [2] is wonderful, rigorous and comprehensive. But like much conservation science, it’s an example where an important piece of context is overlooked. This is so important I think, that the bears’ survival depends on it. An utterly compelling overview of the importance of animals in the functioning of the living world. This is a hugely important book, and the more widely it is read the better our futures will be!”

How abundant did sun bears use to be? Population estimates aren’t necessary to understand importance. Augeri (2005) [2] states: ‘It should be noted that the reality of population estimates is that they are approximations and the reality of animal distributions is that they are patchy. Very few species or taxa, if any, occupy 100% of their range and have perfectly uniform distributions.’

Change the way we work and scientists have a far greater role to play. One where the community asks for advice on how to behave to conserve spider crabs. This is a more constructive and rewarding job for any scientist. It’s one that works together with those who care the most about our ocean creatures. Images of the spider crab aggregationmya Animal life begins re-evolving into new forms and starts to colonise the land. Finally they get control of the planet-killing plants and beginning to stabilise the coupled ocean-atmosphere climate systems. If ancient trees die that’s a symptom of an ecosystem that has collapsed to a point that it’s not longer habitable. To maintain continuity of our own survival requires a new way of thinking about ancient trees as much as it does about humans. Ancient trees also depend on wildlife in the balance. And the impacts will reach far beyond the potential cultural loss of iconic species like tigers, rhinos, and whales. Salon Privé Magazine is the quintessence of luxury lifestyle journalism, renowned for its sophisticated portrayal of the opulent world since its inception in 2008. As a vanguard of high-end living, the magazine serves as an exclusive portal into the realms of haute couture, fine arts, and the aristocratic lifestyle. With over a decade of expertise, Salon Privé has established itself as the definitive source for those who seek the allure of luxury and elegance.

But remove animals altogether and ancient trees die. Healthy trees depend on a healthy abundance and structural diversity of wildlife. The rebuilding process is messy and somewhat unpredictable, which often attracts criticism. This misunderstanding of how ecosystems work leads to a litany of mistakes in conservation Why is animal conservation important? Animal conservation is important, because animals are the only mechanism to create biodiversity, which is the mechanism that creates a habitable planet for humans. Without animals, the energy from today’s plants (algae, trees, flowers etc) will eventually reach the atmosphere and ocean, much of it as carbon. The quantity of this plant-based waste is so (usually killing animals by regarding them as ‘pests’ before they can do what is needed to rebuild). We regularly deny animals their existential right to restore ecosystems alongside us. It’s important to recognise conservation does not describe an action. The conservation movement is full of such non-specific language and often fails to describe what is, or needs, to be done. For that, we should be using more intentional and motivational words. Preservation applies to what still exists Complex long-lived animals like spider crabs have developed their own culture. Genetics is only a starting framework. A spider crab’s genes might entice it to walk in a general direction but joining other crabs who ‘know where to go’, increases the chance of everyone’s survival. It’s this population-level intelligence that swings the balance between a successful (likeliest) species and one that goes extinct. It’s also the key to healthy ecosystems, as that is what animals build. When it comes to wildlife it’s all about protection. Unless we protect wildlife, ecosystems collapse and there is no preservation of life or conservation of ecosystems. Nature still exists but in the long term we may not be part of it.The historical distribution of sun bears was nonetheless over a massive area of southeast Asia. The core areas of primary rainforest (where bears’ occur at highest density [2]) were all occupied at one time.
