About this deal

I loved it off my driver where I was getting some of my most impressive numbers of good strikes, and a very penetrating low spinning flight The driver spin is just north of average for a Tour ball, but that’s provided me with some extra carry distance and better consistency. Ball speed is also excellent. But does that extra tiny drop of paint in a few dimples really make any difference to the accuracy of a shot? And if so, how much are we talking here? An inch? A foot? Yards? It can’t be much, surely, but at least you know with the unpainted ball that you are removing that variable entirely.

No buying guide would be complete without at least mentioning price. Thankfully most brands make models at different price points and you can rest assured there is decent performance on offer across the price spectrum. It is also worth considering that personalized balls cost a little more money. Each piece of gear bearing the Staff moniker has been of the utmost quality and designed for the better player. But no one really doubted that Wilson could do irons and wedges. The biggest gamble of the new Staff Model Era comes now with the Staff Model golf ball. Will this offering continue to build the brand or start to blow it down? I’m very much in the latter category and of all the balls I’ve tested recently the DUO has been the one I’ve most enjoyed putting with. I love the feel of it off the putter as it’s so soft you almost don’t even feel it at all. That isn’t going to suit everyone of course. Since those humble beginnings, our endeavour has blossomed into a robust and trusted online retailer, representing the leading brands in the golf industry. We take immense pride in being your go-to destination for all things golf! The world’s softest and longest premium 2-piece ball is how Wilson describe the DUO soft+. A bold claim perhaps, but it has plenty of substance. In theory all of this does make sense, but realistically the margin of difference between an imperfectly painted ball and a perfectly painted one is going to be negligible to the point of being impossible to even measure. The Wilson Staff Model is one of the best premium golf balls on the market and a ball that is being played on professional tours around the world. The Staff Model features a four-piece construction and soft urethane cover - a combination that delivers exceptional distance off the tee while providing players with maximum control and exceptional feel from 100 yards out. There is a world of difference when it comes to performance of a low compression, two-piece ball like the DUO when compared to a higher compression, premium ball such as the ProV1 for example. OverallThe 50-yard pitch data I collected was not too bad, although not as much spin as I’d like to go out on the golf course with. I am a really low spinner, I am working on it but even for me these numbers are a bit on the low side. This will be a problem for some players and not for others. I have found that by moving to a high spinning ball I can get as much as 500 more RPM which helps me on short and long shots. Wilson offers two premium golf balls in its current range, the Staff Model and Staff Model R, both of which offer tour-proven performance. Both balls feature a four-piece construction and highly responsive urethane cover, with the result being distance and control in the long game and ample spin and soft feel on and around the greens. The primary difference between the two models is that the R version of the ball is unpainted, which Wilson says will deliver a more controlled trajectory, increased short game spin, and improved accuracy on full shots. Do any professional golfers use Wilson golf balls?

Where I’ve been most pleased with the Staff Model is on long approaches. The combination of slightly higher spin and strong ball speed has resulted in longer, higher long iron shots and more eagle putts. Any ball that puts me in position to make more eagles is going to see more time in the bag. The Wilson Staff Model ball is very white. This seems to be the way with some brands. They are a kind of brilliant white as opposed to the repressed look I am used to. The model R has a duller look. The branding is also very sure of itself, the Staff brand is bold in its modern, capitalised type face. It’s a 35 compression which does indeed make it as soft as anything out there, while the VelocitiCOR aids greater distance. What is VelocitiCOR? According to Frank Simonutti, Director of Golf Ball Innovation for Wilson, it’s basically “steroids for golf balls”.Unlike golfers, golf balls are allowed to be enhanced with steroids. Not only that, but because it spins much less it will also allow average golfers to find more fairways as it won't deviate as much with side spin from hooks or slices. So basically, it’s straighter and longer, but only if you aren’t a highly accomplished player.Wedges: Dynacraft Dual Millled 52*, SteelFiber i125 S -or- Scratch 8620 DD 53*, SteelFiber i125 S; Cobra Snakebite 56* -or- Wilson Staff PMP 58*, Dynamic S -or- Ram TW282 SW -or- Ram TW276 SW Just like the Staff Model R it has a V-COR for increased distance off the tee and a 362-dimple pattern smooths airflow around the ball for a lower ball trajectory and maximum distance. Irons grab bag: 1-PW Golden Ram TW276, NV105 S; 1-PW Golden Ram TW282, RIP Tour 115 R; 2-PW Golden Ram Vibration Matched, NS Pro 950WF S; testing: Arias D-23 5i w/Modus 120 S
