Description

Badger and Toad appear only twice, but very satisfyingly. Badger is hosting the coldhungrytired duo of unexpected guests. They are all clad in Badger-sized robes and slippers.

Squirrels and rabbits, who are generally good-natured (although rabbits are described as "a mixed lot"). Inga Moore's edition, abridged and illustrated by her, is arranged so that a featured line of the text also serves as a caption to a picture. William Horwood created several sequels to The Wind in the Willows: The Willows in Winter, Toad Triumphant, The Willows and Beyond, and The Willows at Christmas (1999). These books include some of the same incidents as Scott's sequel, including a climax in which Toad steals a Bleriot monoplane. Pictured right: Paul Bransom illustration of Toad “Dwelling chiefly on his own cleverness, and presence of mind in emergencies” from the 1913 edition in which Paul Bramsom illustrated 10 colour plates . Toad at this time was unclothed. In chapter 4 the winter drawing has artistic merit, being a lovely rendering of the Otter against a snowbank. But why spend the effort on a minor character? The song " Sweet Amarillo", written by Donna Weiss and performed by Old Crow Medicine Show, mentions The Wind in the Willows. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, a 1949 animated adaptation produced by Walt Disney Productions for RKO Radio Pictures, narrated by Basil Rathbone. One half of the animated feature was based on the unrelated short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

However, the new text adaptation stinks. And my cover says 'The Classic Edition' which is a downright lie. There are 9 chapters, and some of the best classic dialogue has been chopped. In very tiny print, (appropriate, as I'd be embarassed too!) is the adapter, Elizabeth Encarnacion. And The Book Blog have done a nice review of the book itself: http://thebookblog.com/review/the-wind-in-the-willowsThe Narnia books are in the latter category. I just can't, as an adult, find the magic in them. I'm quite certain it would have been there when I was a kid. Maybe I'll try them again in a few years and at least find Half Magic in them!
