Simu Liu Unveils New Single 'Don't', Inspired by 'The Hard Times in My Life' ". 7 April 2023. Archived from the original on 7 April 2023.Liu was born in Harbin, China, on 19 April 1989, son of Zhenning and Zheng Liu. His parents met while attending university in Beijing, where they both studied engineering. His father, Zhenning, went to the United States to study for a PhD whilst his mother worked in Beijing, and Liu was raised until age 5 by his grandparents in Harbin, China, "in a small apartment, without running water for much of the day," in circumstances he recalled as "idyllic and happy." [7] [8] His parents later emigrated with him to Canada, where they supplemented their scholarships with dish-washing jobs and eventually became successful aerospace engineers; Liu was raised in Mississauga, Ontario. Pride in the individual, pride in one’s culture and heritage, and pride in one’s community. I am proud of everything accomplished during our run and cannot wait to see how the legacy of the show and others like it impact future generations in finding their voice and telling their own stories.” Liu’s book begins with the call from Marvel to say that he has got the job as Shang-Chi, Marvel’s first Asian superhero. When he calls his parents, hoping they might share his excitement, that they might finally think all their sacrifices were worth it, his father’s reaction to the news, he writes, “sounds like someone’s just told him his dry cleaning would be ready on time”. They were just happy he had a job. His book is both funny and wry: “My parents didn’t have much to offer on the subject of coolness or puberty, other than that it was a totally meaningless diversion from the true purpose of childhood: getting into Harvard,” he writes. But it is also unflinching. The abuse, both physical and verbal, he suffers from his parents as a teenager is brutal – they beat and belittle him.For the July-August issue of the magazine, Liu also discussed his upcoming Marvel debut as the MCU’s first leading superhero of Asian descent in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” in theaters Sept. 3.
