When choosing a tomato variety, remember that there is more to consider than just colour, as Gardener Hannah Reid shares: Yellow Brandywine tomatoes are a late-season variety coming out of Ohio with a slightly tart but sweet flavor and often produce more orange tomatoes. These are fun because they don’t have regular tomato leaves, they look more like potato leaves. Yellow Brandywine is great for getting delicious tomato sandwiches in the summer months. The ‘Yellow Pear’ tomato produces many small pear-shaped fruits. This heirloom variety is a classic in home gardens. The plants are robust and healthy, and their fruits have a mild and sweet taste. Determinate plants are typically shorter, with a set number of leaves, and produce fruit all at once. Indeterminate plants are typically taller, with a more sprawling growth habit, and produce fruit continuously throughout the growing season. While the tumbling tom does tend to be shorter than other tomato varieties, it is not always the case, and some plants may produce fruit continuously. So, which is it? The answer may be that it is both! Some plants may display characteristics of both types, depending on their individual growth habits. Tumbling Tom Yellow TomatoA heritage variety, ‘Galina’ is an indeterminate type, well suited to growing further north, It comes from Siberia and so is a great choice for those with a cold climate and a short growing season. Tumbling Tom tomatoes are a type of determinate tomato that is compact and well suited for growing in containers. They are a good choice for beginning gardeners or those with limited space. Tomatoes are a warm season crop that should be started indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last frost date in your area. To plant, fill a container with a good quality potting mix and make a small indentation in the center of the mix. Gently remove the Tumbling Tom tomato seedling from its container and plant it in the indentation, being careful not to damage the roots. Water well and keep the soil moist but not soggy. When the plant is about 6-8 inches tall, pinch off the tips of the main stems to encourage branching. Fertilize every 2-3 weeks with a water soluble fertilizer. Tomatoes should be ready to harvest in 60-70 days. A colour variation of the well-known ‘De Berao’is the ‘De Berao Yellow’. It produces large plum-shaped fruits and is suited for outdoors. This variety prospers even without rain protection.

The delicious Mexican-style salsa can easily be made with yellow tomatoes. It’s even better when you use a mix of red and yellow tomatoes. Tomato Soup Trailing tomatoes areself-branching, so other than pinching the tip out when you plant them up, there is no need to do anything else to them, unlike other tomato varieties - so they're ideal to growif you're not a confident gardener. Bury the roots deeply (up to first ‘seed’ leaves on the stem) and water well, to settle the compost around them.
