Taking just the base Ronin RS3 Pro into consideration in this review and it is incredible, with solid support for all mirrorless and DSLR cameras suited to filmmaking. In use, the RS3 Pro is fast to react and offers plenty of onboard adjustments and features. However, it really starts to shine once the accessories are attached, and while most accessories can wait there are two that you should consider purchasing at the outset; the RavenEye and Focus motor. Build and overall quality is excellent, and once charged and powered on, balancing initially takes a little time to master. The small amounts of movement require patience as each axis is balanced, and despite the powerful motors, it’s still best to perfect the balance from the outset. The performance of the Ronin RS3 Pro in isolation is excellent. Other manufacturers don’t, as yet, match the build quality; the fact that it will equally easily balance a Sony A7 III or Sony FX6 without issue means plenty of scope for all levels. Added photo capture, video recording, camera settings, autofocus, and focus pull support for the Sony A7R5 camera with supported Sony E mount lenses using a Multi-Camera Control Cable (USB-C). To use autofocus on the Sony A7R5 camera, half press the camera control button on the gimbal. The DJI RS 3 Mini is DJI’s latest release in the company’s range of single-handed gimbal stabiliser, and its compact form makes it a welcome addition to the line. At launch, due to that size reduction, it instantly goes head to head with the formidable ZHIYUN WEEBILL 3, so it needs to impress from the outset.

In the test, the Bluetooth connection between the camera and the gimbal worked well, with the record button on the gimbal robustly connecting with the function on the camera as if they were connected by cable. The big feature of the RS 3 Mini is that it’s small and lightweight, over 40% less than the RS 3 and 50% lighter than the RS 3 Pro. This means it is an ideal solution for anyone who finds those larger gimbals too heavy to use comfortably or wants a nice compact gimbal stabiliser for their mirrorless camera. The size and weight also lend the gimbal for travel, documentary or any scenario where you need to be agile and travel light. A big new addition to the Ronin RS3 is the LiDAR focus technology. This optional module sits on top of the camera’s hot shoe and plugs into the DJI Focus Motor (Also optional) and RS3 Pro. Once plugged in and calibrated, it then creates a fast AF system for manual Cine lenses. As each lens needs to be calibrated before use, DJI has ensured that up to three lens preset profiles can be stored. Gimbal-shot video is much more in evidence these days, and making it possible without adding too much weight or size is a great achievement. We can see real appeal for most professionals –an ideal second camera choice for weddings, for example.

Added support for zoom control using front dial for Sony FX3, A7S3, A7C, A7M3, A7M4, A7R3, A7R4, A9 II, ZV-1, A6400 and A6600 cameras when connecting the gimbal via Bluetooth.

The DJI RS3 Pro, however, is a very different device from most other gimbals on the market. Sure, it has accessories that enable wireless video transmission and control, but it’s part of an eco-system with the DJI RS3 Pro at the core. Pro level stabilisation at an affordable price Added photo capture, video recording, camera settings, autofocus, and focus pull support for Panasonic Lumix S5 II cameras with supported L-mount lens using a Multi-Camera Control Cable (USB-C). To use autofocus on the Panasonic Lumix S5 II, half press the camera control button on the gimbal.Once done, the DJI RS 3 Mini is everything you could want for mirrorless camera stabilisation; the balance and reaction speeds are excellent. A Sony A73 with 35mm or even 24-70mm and the rig works as well as any other; swap for a Canon EOS R5 C with 24-70mm, and that only just pushes the small gimbals limits! While the RS 3 Mini offers 3rd generation stabilisation, it doesn’t offer the superb SuperSmooth mode, but if you haven’t tried it, you won’t worry too much that you haven’t got it! For some cameras that are BlueTooth enabled, the Ronin RS3 Pro now has BlueTooth connectivity. At launch, this works with a series of Canon cameras, and the compatibility list will inevitably expand at speed to cover most cameras with BlueTooth. This mirrorless option will then give plenty of options for most run-and-gun videographers and filmmakers who are simply looking for a cheap, high-quality stabiliser. It also gives pros a lightweight gimbal that can easily be transported into places where it would usually be difficult or, at the very least, inconvenient to take a full-sized gimbal. Please select the corresponding camera control cable according to your camera model. Plug one end of the cable to the shutter control port on the camera and plug the other end into the RSS camera control port on DJI RS 3 Mini.
