The LED display on the MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11 makes it easy to know whether an attached lens is compatible or not and whether the mount converter control data needs to be updated for operation with that lens.

After using the MC-11 converter there is no doubt that the folks at Sigma have managed to produce a solid piece of gear that can open up a entire new spectrum of lenses to those who use Sony mirrorless cameras. The converter is built like a tank, looks great, and falls onto a happy middle ground between higher priced mount converters. What’s better is that with the addition of the USB port the converter can grow with technology giving it staying power in the photo gear world. The converter feels quite solid and mounts very cleanly to the A7R MK1 test camera used for the review. The lens provided by Sigma for testing with the converter is the 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art which the adapter also mated to tightly. Aesthetically, the lens and converter matched fantastically. Keep in mind that the LED indicator light did not illuminate when I attached the Canon lens meaning it is completely non-compatible with the firmware of the converter. With that being said, using a Canon lens with the MC-11 is not outside the realm of experimentation. Just proceed with caution.

There are many challenges to designing high-quality mount converter and topping the list is aptly handling phase detection AF in newer cameras and this is where the Sigma MC-11 is groundbreaking in its support for the Sony E-mount systems,” states Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “The new Sigma MC-11 mitigates complications with a purpose-built lens control data system engineered for maintaining superior AF functionality. So the growing number of Sony E-mount camera users who have been asking for more lens options, now have access to a large pool of lenses that fully embody Sigma’s signature quality and performance.” While Sigma bills the MC-11 as a converter that enables Sigma Canon-mount lenses to be used on Sony cameras (including the superb A-series optics), naturally there’s a lot of interest from photographers with a collection of Canon lenses. With this in mind, I tested the MC-11 with the Sony A7R III and a collection of Canon lenses. We were keen to try out some of our Sigma EF lenses on the range-topping Sony A7R II to find out what the AF performance is actually like, and if the combination of the worlds' smallest full-frame camera and Sigma's chunky Art lenses actually makes sense (or indeed work at all). Before updating SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11 firmware, please ensure you update SIGMA Optimization Pro to the latest version. The compatibility of MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11 with the OS features of both the lens and the camera body makes possible superior correction of camera shake and other stability issues. When used with a camera body that features an OS function, MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11 allows angle shake correction in the lens for superior corrective performance.

Sigma should be capable of doing better - after all it has been reverse engineering all the Canon EF lens protocols since Adam was a boy.The idea of the LED light is great as it gives you a clear sign of where your combo stands. When I received the lenses, I noticed right away that a firmware update was needed for three lenses.

Some older Tamron lenses apparently don't work on it at all. I guess those are victims of incompatible reverse engineering of EF protocols relative to what Sigma has done. I have not found any Canon lenses that didn't work on it, but I haven't tried that many. I do have a Tamron 24-70/2.8 G1, and that works fine on the MC-11. Glass I tested on. Canon ef 28 f1.8, Canon ef 50 f1.4, Canon ef 85 f1.8, Canon ef 17-40 f4, Tamron 24-70 f2.8 vc, and Tamron 70-200 f2.8 vc.In the end, it is a solution: not the best but at least you have one if you already own these lenses and want to keep using them or if you need them while waiting for Sony to release an equivalent. I think that among all the adapters available, this is definitely the one to consider right now (for Sigma lenses especially): it is one of the most complete solutions with a reasonable price tag. I hope Sigma will bring compatibility with more lenses in the future. It has become compatible with the SIGMA 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Contemporary (Firmware Ver.2.00) and SIGMA 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Sports (Firmware Ver.2.00).
