Grass Is Greener: A theme in Harllo's storyline. As he lives in the slums of Darujhistan, he dreams of the world beyond the city walls where there are pastures and endless possibilities. And when he ends up at the mines and befriends Bainisk, they dream together of the city and Harllo's real mother and a better world. OK, outside of all the layers/metaphors/sociological insights of kelyk, at its core, it’s just kinda gross. Thus endeth my deep insight for the day. His belief he had “no choice” but to then pen the poor things up in a some isolated tower (more isolation). Desra thinks how there are strong people and weak people in the world and the weak were worthy of contempt, despite outnumbering the strong. Most of the strong are just as bad, bullies more often than not, but some are worthy—the quiet ones who often thought themselves weaker than they were but when push came to shove held out. Clip is not one such, Clip whom she will use as necessary. Nimander, however, is one of the worthy ones, she has decided.

The Dividual: Scorch and Leff. While Scorch seems perpetually surprised by everything, Leff is more on the suspicious side, but they always act as one entity, and mostly serve as comic relief. They turn out to be surprisingly competent, however, when the need arises. We end the chapter with another run down- Thordy is setting flatstones in her garden in a particular pattern. Spite is still lounging in the ship, she has noticed the proximity of her kin. And little Harllo will soon be lost to darkness.Tulas Shorn stealing the horses of Traveller, Karsa and Samar Dev to delay their approach to Darujhistan, to buy time for Anomander Rake's and Hood's plans to get going. Is it for faith to deliver peace, when on all sides inequity thrives?” I think that line’s been asked of religion since, well, religion. And a disquieting question for many religions it is, I think. In an interview, Erikson has stated that he found it a bit difficult to write the novel because of personal issues. The issue, from subsequent Q&A's and interviews, was revealed to be the death of his father. [1] Save Your Deity: What Seerdomin ends up doing for the Redeemer. An interesting case, in that the Redeemer is not actually a god Seerdomin prays to. Welcome to the Malazan Re-read of the Fallen! Every post will start off with a summary of events, followed by reaction and commentary by your hosts Bill and Amanda (with Amanda, new to the series, going first), and finally comments from Tor.com readers. In this article, we’ll cover Chapter Two of Toll the Hounds (TtH).

Big Brother Bully: Snell is an epic case. He not only bullies his adoptive younger brother Harllo, steals and lies, he also clubs Harllo down — thinking he just killed Harllo — and pretends Harllo ran away, but also tries to sell his two baby sisters into slavery.

Seeing Through Another's Eyes: Mother Dark uses Aranatha, an Empty Shell, to see and occasionally influence the events while she herself in trapped on the other side of the Gate of Darkness. That mostly involves cheering up Nimander and other small things. Down the Rabbit Hole: Alluded to and subverted. Harllo, while working at the mines, climbs down a seemingly endless chute, at the bottom of which he meets a T'lan Imass and helps him. However, after that, Dev'ad Anan Tol simply walks away, leaving Harllo behind, and the magic of the discovery dissipates. Especially because the T'lan Imass manages to get himself interred within the Azath grounds immediately.

Crone asks Baruk to stand a safe distance away and he asks how could he do that. He sends the soul home and with this Crone departs in a hurry, since she now has news to ease her master's mind. Vorcan is coming. Baruk sends for the remaining cabal mage, Derudan. He realises that there are only 3 mages left to stand against the return of the tyrant. He wonders who among them will betray the others. Cavalry of the Dead: Everyone who ever died is marched out of the Warren of Death and into the Warren within Dragnipur right when the forces of Chaos are about to devour those few still dragging the wagon within. The Army of the Dead swoops in and closes with the forces of Chaos just in time to save the day. Serial Killer: Gaz is on a murder spree throughout the book. Turns out he actively contributed to Hood being able to manifest himself in Darujhistan with all the bloodshed.

High King Kallor, ever on a quest to gain a throne, is also on his way to seize what he thinks should be his. Traveller just wants to exact revenge on Hood, but due to his Revenge Before Reason mentality, he is easily manipulated into serving Hood's plan. As far as the white hounds, they’re not related to Paran’s freed hounds, but don’t worry—we’ll get more…. The Seerdomin wears his old uniform as a form of public declaration of guilt and self flagellation. He leaves the city and treks to the Great Barrow, which is a regualar occurence to him. Unlike the worshippers, he visits the Redeemer everyday to offer him company, to seek the humanity of the one made god by everyone else. Might as well share the prayer here:
