Description

Born in Nepal in 1983, Purja's earliest goal was to serve in the British Army with the Brigade of Gurkhas like his father. His father's salary in the service caused the family to struggle a bit, but with the help of his older brothers, he attended a boarding school, and was able to join the Gurkhas in 2003. Eventually, he joined the elite Special Boat Service, which no Gurkha had ever joined. It was tough work, and he was not always treated well by his fellow soliders because of his ethnicity. He was able to take advantage of specialized training, and took a number of climbing courses. This lead to a strong desire to climb Everest, but there were challenges along the way. Even though his first climb had some problems, he was very interested in pursuing this activity, and eventually got on a G200E team trying the climb in 2017. After resigning from the military, he started investigating how he could manage to climb more impressive mountains. This isn't a cheap endeavor, but he undertook efforts to fund Project Possible, as he named his plans. He took money out of equity in his house, and slowly his expeditions gained more attention. He used his adventures to bring attention to climate change, and has so far climbed fourteen of the highest mountains in the world. I am an armchair adventurer - I love reading these stories about hardship, freezing cold temperatures, dangerous conditions and general misery while I'm wrapped up in a blanket, cozy warm and with a steaming cup of tea nearby (The Deadliest Catch was one of my favorite TV shows). I'm also so very impressed by the author's accomplishment to summit the world's 14 highest peaks - without supplemental oxygen!

For eighteen years Ed Viesturs pursued climbing’s holy to stand atop the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, without the aid of bottled oxygen. But No Shortcuts to the Top is as much about the man who would become the first American to achieve that goal as it is about his stunning quest. As Viesturs recounts the stories of his most harrowing climbs, he reveals a man torn between the flat, safe world he and his loved ones share and the majestic and deadly places where only he can go. a b c d e f g h i j k l Bliss, Dominic (12 January 2021). He was at Everest in 1996 making the IMAX film (called, surprisingly, Everest) with David Breashears, and participated in the rescue effort after the killer storm that killed eight people. So, the guy is a hero. Going along with this, there are a lot of instances where he mentions someone once or twice and gives his opinion on them. I don't know why it bothered me, but it did. Just didn't seem necessary. How he motivates himself to achieve the impossible. I heard that Michael Jordan spread a rumor about his opponent disrespecting him, just so he could motivate himself to beat him in the basketball court. Here, Nims Dai creates so over the top scenarios in his heads just so he can push himself to take another step in the snow. Do what works I guess. This is the inside story of my incredible adventure. As a kid in Nepal, barefoot in the mountains, I developed the resilience I needed to later join the Gurkhas, one of the most fearless forces in the British Army. Then in the Special Boat Service I served in some of the world's most dangerous warzones. Those 'politics' included getting permission for the climbs - deep into the mission, China still hadn't approved his request to attempt Shishapangma. Prior to 2019, the fastest ascent of all mountains over 8,000 m was 7 years 310 days, set by Kim Chang-Ho (South Korea). Because of the valuable prize at stake, inter-team meetings had an air of gamesmanship. “We were competing against everyone,” said Nims. “I was like, ‘Hey, guys. You think you are really good? Why you want to know our plans?’ ” In a new film, the 38-year-old former Gurkha and UK Special Forces soldier tells the story of a feat which, if not impossible, is certainly unfeasible.
