They are commonly used in custom car builds, where individuals want to add concealed storage areas while maintaining a sleek and clean exterior appearance. Below is a 1935 house where we reused the shiplap sheathing for interior paneling. We hid the door to a hall bathroom behind horizontal shiplap. Hugh Jefferson Randolph was the Architect on this one, too. Repurposed shiplap sheathing became interior paneling. The door is all but invisible. But it opens to reveal a bathroom. Placement of the book is critical in it functioning correctly. My door opens towards me, this means that the book needs to be placed on the right side (right when facing towards the bookcase). I also wanted it on a lower shelf so that my 2 year old could pull it by standing on a stool. You could place it on one of a few shelves but refer to my pictures to see what I determined to be optimal placement. You can not install the book on the left hand side but feel free to put other non latchy books wherever you want.

If you’re using an entire bookshelf, either reinforce the sections which will have a hinge or ensure it’s a sturdy shelf that can handle it. For part of a larger bookshelf, cutting the section needed for the entrance will likely be necessary. Note: Make sure there is adequate clearance for the door to open and close. Use a door barricade. The previously mentioned door barricade sometimes can also be used for French doors. For this to work, the door should have a wide enough frame where you can mount the plate. When in doubt, reach out to the manufacturer. If it’s a crawlspace, you may not need it. However, if you’re headed from the main floor to the basement, it may take some stairs — or a fireman’s pole! Hardware is Vital. Installing invisible door hinges is relatively easy, especially when compared to traditional hinges. If you have a walk-in pantry, installing an additional secret hidden door inside is possible, especially if you have additional space or room beyond your pantry. A pantry provides great hidden space, as it is not often frequented by guests and is not likely to be the first location someone searches if they are looking for hidden doors and entrances.

Apply a 1" wide strip of Construction Adhesive (slow-setting adhesive is recommended) to the perimeter of the drywall on the flush door side. On the Outswing Version the drywall is inserted into the 1/2″ x 5/8″ rabbet on the door frame’s non-flush side (use of a J-Channel is recommended). It sits well enough that just a little nudge of the book will trigger the satisfying and classic sound. I couldn’t be happier with the result. Push doors: Knowing where a hidden door is located in a room with walls that are flush with the door provides an optimal push door Whenever you are in the process of building a secret entrance in your home or even outside of your home, it is important to remember that you are trying to keep it hidden from public view. Consider how your entrance will be accessible to you, and whether or not you are able to hide it from the naked eye or from those who are even inside of your home.Set door frame into opening and shim it plum and level before adhesive sets. The PVC Flange will rest against the drywall and will bond with the adhesive. Answer: The best way to hide the seams of a secret bookcase door is to line the molding up as instructed in our DIY plans . Finally, this last series of photos below shows a remodel we worked on with FAB Architecture. What you are seeing is an oak-paneled basement wall with two hidden doors. The door on the right leads to a media room. You can see the vertical outline of another door to the left, which hides a mechanical closet for a wine conditioning HVAC unit. The door on the right leads to a media room. The door on the left side of the oak-paneled wall hides an HVAC unit. The only thing that gives the doors away are the thin vertical seams on the sides of the doors. From the outside you will pull the book to open the door. From the inside you just need to reach up and release the bolt from the latch. On the Inswing Version the drywall will "butt up" to the door frame on the non-flush side (caulking at the joint is recommended).
