The visuals; this film is shot very well. The scenes at Mars are breathtaking as well as kind of scary too because of what Mark Watney is going through. The CGI is handled well, even though it is kind of obvious that it is CGI however the film had me invested so much that I didn't care. Sneider, Jeff (May 15, 2013). Time magazine criticized another duct tape based repair: "When a pressure leak causes an entire pod on Watney’s habitat to blow up, he patches a yawning opening in what's left of the dwelling with plastic tarp and PSA duct tape." Such a repair would not work in an average Martian temperature of −60°C (−76°F). [148] a b c Lidz, Gogo (September 20, 2015). "NASA and 'The Martian': It Was Written in the Stars". Newsweek. Jessica Chastain as Commander Melissa Lewis, USN Submarine Warfare officer, oceanographer, geologist and the Ares III mission commander. The tone; this film is pretty funny actually. The jokes are well written and it helps to keep you enlightened. But then there are times where things go down and its very intense and heartfelt, this film manages to balance both tones very well. This film had a danger of being too sappy but they nailed the tone well!

Kroll, Justin (March 12, 2013). "Fox Finds 'Martian' For Simon Kinberg". Variety. Archived from the original on September 23, 2015 . Retrieved August 25, 2015. The film] is the first genuine Mars movie. It is the first movie that attempts to be realistic and that is actually about human beings grappling with the problems of exploring Mars, as opposed to various movies set on Mars that are essentially either shoot 'em ups or horror films. It does not engage in fantasy: no monsters, no magic, no Nazis. However, there are a number of technical mistakes. [120] Although The Martian splits time evenly with Damon's plight and the efforts to rescue him, Matt's time alone on the screen with the full range of emotions displayed is what got him his Best Actor nomination. Besides the realistic depiction of Mars, his performance is the other pillar on which this fine film rests. I would give mention to Jessica Chastain and her fine performance as a tough and yet humane leader of her team.Dorminey, Bruce (August 31, 2015).
