Asmita Dubey, chief digital and marketing officer, and Camille Kroely, chief metaverse and Web3 officer at L’Oréal Group, talk about the actions that L’Oréal has taken with regard to the metaverse and how these fit with the company’s mission and broader digital transformation agenda. They also share what they have learnt about changes in user and creator behavior, and how they see the future of beauty evolving.

Here are six flexible ambition examples you can use as a template when finding ways to let your ambition shine: Still, I expected more. As another reviewer mentioned, this is not a bombshell exposé at all. Very few secrets are divulged, and much of the information will be old news to long-time fans of the brand. They might get a little thrill from all the name drops, though. (Eva Alt! Annie Kreighbaum!) Jealousy isn’t inherently bad. Often, it signals the things you wish you had, like a graduate degree or promotion. Notice these feelings of envy and consider whether you’d like to add these accomplishments to your list of “to-do” objectives. You might go through the same four steps offered in the previous section to determine who you envy and why.Owning your own business: Very ambitious people will likely get to the point where being their own boss is their dream job — especially if this is the only rung left on the career development ladder. And if you’re ambitious, you’re uniquely qualified to succeed since you won’t give up and are prepared to learn from your mistakes. Giving full-figured women greater access made economic sense. By adhering to traditional beauty standards, the fashion industry had been leaving money on the table. Designers such as Christian Siriano made a public point of catering to larger customers and, in doing so, were hailed as smart and as capitalist heroes. Now it’s fairly common for even the most rarefied fashion brands to include large models in their runway shows. I’m not sure why I read this book when I’m more of an Urban Decay kinda gal makeup- and vibe-wise, a bit gothy and with absolutely zero interest in whatever effortless, is she or isn’t she, no makeup-makeup look Glossier was ever peddling. Hell, I prefer “effortful and she definitely is” - I don’t even believe in blending eyeliner, and my ideal mascara would probably be named something like Perverted Tarantula. But anywho, I read it because I love a business case study and especially one starring a woman in business, hell yes, let’s go for it! I’ll sit with it in the cafeteria and be its cool punk friend. In the West, the legacy media are now sharing influence with digital media, social media, and a new generation of writers and editors who came of age in a far more multicultural world—a world that has a more fluid view of gender. The millennial generation, those born between 1981 and 1996, is not inclined to assimilate into the dominant culture but to stand proudly apart from it. The new definition of beauty is being written by a selfie generation: people who are the cover stars of their own narrative. We are also changing from social following to new, empowered communities, and from digital transformation to data transformation, as AI is becoming more prevalent and is almost in everyday use.

Asmita Dubey: We believe that the future of beauty is physical, digital, and virtual, and we are shaping it with science, technology, and creativity. We have already been exploring new business models like social commerce, marketing in the digital age and augmented-reality (AR) beauty, which is why we bought ModiFace in 2018. Through this technology, we have already had more than 1 billion try-ons using our virtual makeup and hair color. Your sense of ambition might wax and wane depending on where you’re at in your life — it can even change daily if you’re feeling extra tired or burned out. But you’ll always have desires you want to work toward, and any time you take on this work, you’re activating your own ambition. We know that beauty has financial value. We want to be around beautiful people because they delight the eye but also because we think they are intrinsically better humans. We’ve been told that attractive people are paid higher salaries. In truth, it’s a bit more complicated than that. It’s really a combination of beauty, intelligence, charm, and collegiality that serves as a recipe for better pay. Still, beauty is an integral part of the equation.Modern challenges require new approaches and today marks the beginning of a new phase for our National Landscapes, as they strengthen their existing partnerships, and forge new ones that will secure in perpetuity the huge range of benefits that come from these special places. Big change has taken place during the past 75 years and bigger changes still can be expected during the decades ahead. Uniting the National Landscapes in this way is very welcome and spells immense opportunity and great hope for the future.” It felt like Meltzer was trying to paint Emily Weiss in a Devil Wears Prada light without being too obvious. Camille Kroely: We’ve identified streams of opportunities in which we are in test-and-learn mode, with various champion brands that might be more fitted to explore in the metaverse. For example, on the brand story-telling side where you can bring value through self-expression, we have L’Oréal Professionnel and Maybelline in partnership with Ready Player Me, the number-one platform for avatar creation in the metaverse. Second, there is a strong interest in the possibilities of metaverse commerce. People are ready to spend money on a monthly basis to invest in beauty opportunities and brands, specifically brand-led virtual experiences. How does the metaverse, especially the immersive experience side, impact your brands?

But when your goals aren’t lofty enough, you might feel stagnant and unfulfilled, making it better to set ambitious objectives that offer more growth and satisfaction. Do your friends shrug off goal-setting, or do they share your enthusiasm for growth and hard work? Your social health impacts your attitude, so be mindful of who you hang out with. Surround yourself with like-minded people who share your focus. This might mean making new friends as an adult to find the right mix of people who motivate and inspire you. 2. Be punctual You’re only as successful as the goals you set, so make them specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. Not everyone can become an astronaut or Olympic athlete. You need to balance your well-being and available resources with the right amount of challenge so you feel motivated by and capable of achieving your goals. 6. Leverage your motivators One might think that as female designers themselves aged, they would begin to highlight older women in their work. But women in fashion are part of the same cult of youth that they created. They Botox and diet. They swear by raw food and SoulCycle. How often do you see a chubby designer? A gray-haired one? Designers still use the phrase “old lady” to describe clothes that are unattractive. A “matronly” dress is one that is unflattering or out-of-date. The language makes the bias plain. But today women don’t take it as a matter of course. They revolt. Making “old” synonymous with unattractive is simply not going to stand. Creating a career plan: If you’re ambitious, you’ll likely create a career plan or professional development plan that considers both short-term and long-term goals. This helps you prepare to meet every objective.

How do you think the metaverse can influence beauty in the real world?

I think I was most surprised at the kind of devotion that a lot of people had. Like, even some of the people that were most critical of Glossier, who had worked there and it hadn’t gone well, or retail employees who felt like they were getting short shrift, those were often the people that were the biggest fans of Glossier and who were still really rooting for them in this very beautiful and sincere way. It really helped underscore this idea that you could have two differing feelings and notions about a place and a person and a brand. That was just very human, and especially with a company like Glossier that nurtured fandom so much, it’s hard to let go of that feeling. We have done studies to understand how Gen Zers are approaching the metaverse. Gen Zers are not digital natives, they are already gaming and metaverse natives. Out of them, 57 percent feel that they can express themself more openly when they use digital identities—avatars that they can customize the way they want. In the past decade, beauty has moved resolutely forward into territory that was once deemed niche. Nonbinary and transgender are part of the mainstream beauty narrative. As the rights of LGBTQ individuals have been codified in the courts, so have the aesthetics particular to them been absorbed into the beauty dialogue. Transgender models walk the runways and appear in advertising campaigns. They are hailed on the red carpet for their glamour and good taste but also for their physical characteristics. Their bodies are celebrated as aspirational.
