Description

The Lumix DC-TZ95D has a focal length of between 24mm and 720mm thanks to the 30x optical zoom. What size is the Lumix DC-TZ95D? So it’s not a massive update, but while there may not be a lot that’s new, the TZ95 / ZS80 inherits the multitude of features that made its predecessor, and indeed all the TZ / ZS models before it, such a big hit with consumers. These include a 3 inch 1040k dot tilting touch screen, separate mode dial for exposure settings, a programmable lens ring, 10fps continuous shooting plus 8 Megapixel 4K modes at 30fps, 4K video, and RAW shooting. Of course the biggest draw here, the one that will tempt you away from your smartphone, is the 30x optical zoom. With 24-720mm on offer, it’s well suited to travelling situations where you might be faced with a range of different subjects. Push the power on button and you’ll see that the fairly large lens protrudes heftily far from the body, getting even longer as you zoom in. Overall though, we were pretty happy with the shots we got from the Panasonic Lumix TZ95, particularly given the limitations outlined above. But then we were unusually blessed with plenty of spring sunshine...

Compared to the 20mp Canon Powershot SX740, the Panasonic gives lower noise at ISO800 and above, although colour saturation remains stronger on the Canon.Compared to the 18mp Sony Cyber-shot HX99, the Panasonic gives slightly better results at ISO800 and ISO1600, but it's pretty minimal.Compared to the 16mp Nikon Coolpix A1000, the Nikon gives slightly better noise performance, ignoring the focusing issues we had with the A1000. For the best noise results, the 12mp Panasonic Lumix TZ70 still holds the title for this type of camera with the same size sensor. Binoculars Vortex Binoculars Canon Binoculars Swarovski Binoculars Hawke Binoculars Celestron Binoculars Nikon Binoculars Steiner Binoculars Zeiss Binoculars Binocular Accessories If we’ve a grumble, however, it’s that this isn’t perhaps a camera for shooting in very low light, especially if handheld, as we discovered on our travels, whereby the effects of camera shake are obvious. The fact that the ISO range tops out at a modest selectable ISO3200 at least means that the worst effects of image noise are avoided – we’d advise shooting up to ISO1600, however and leaving it at that, if you want to avoid a noticeable softening and degradation of the image entirely. Twenty megapixels is quite a lot to cram onto a 1/2.3-inch sensor – it’s probably the most you’d want to – so inevitably something has to give.

Battery life for the TZ95 is quoted at a fairly decent 380 shots, and you can eek more life out of it by using careful power management (for instance, turning it on and off in-between shots). It should last most shooters a full day, but the fact that it can be powered via USB and charged on the move could be useful for particularly intensive travel days. Designed with the classic compact size of the DC-TZ95 but now with an improved 20,3 MP MOS sensor and a 2.330K-dot live viewfinder and an improved 1800K dot screen resolution, allowing for enhanced clarity even in love light situations. It is just frustrating when considering an upgrade, not being able to easily compare. (I was reading on an android tablet). Alongside the COOLPIX A1000 there doesn’t look to be a great difference in size and in fact there’s no more than a millimetre or two between them in any dimension, they’re also almost identical in weight. As we’re looking at them from the front, I’ll mention that the COOLPIX A1000 has a second zoom control on the lens barrel, whereas the TZ95 / ZS80 has a programmable ring. However, if you’re operating the camera in a darkened environment, like a concert hall or theatre, the proximity of the main power and video buttons means that it is easy to mistake one for the other and turn the camera off when you actually meant to start recording. Again, familiarity with the camera over time helps such mistakes to be avoided. Commendably this Panasonic is swift to power up in any event, being ready for action in around two seconds, its lens extending from its position flush to the body to arrive at its extreme wide-angle 24mm equivalent setting.

I also found that using time sync lost summer time on my camera, so it became an hour wrong! I hadn't set summer time in the main menu.)
