About this deal

If you want more power or faster recycling for hard shooting, the Nikon SB-400 is the ultimate mirrorless flash. It works flawlessly with the Nikon Z50, even turning on and off with the Nikon Z50's power switch. This is why the Z mount was created. The Noct is a testament to Nikon’s commitment to optical innovation driven by more than a century of expertise,” said Jay Vannatter, Executive Vice President, Nikon Inc. “We promised a new dimension of optical performance for the Nikon Z series and NIKKOR Z lens lineup, and by announcing our fastest NIKKOR lens ever made, the NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct, we are making this claim a reality.” Key Features and Specifications Not to keep the pro’s feeling left out, also announced today is the fastest NIKKOR lens ever made, the new NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct lens. The 58mm Noct is a one-of-a-kind lens that pays homage to the extraordinary optical legacy that the previous Noct-NIKKOR 58mm f/1.2 lens established, while demonstrating the superiority and potential of the Nikon Z Mount. Created for the most discerning photographers, the new Noct lens is an exclusively manual focus prime lens with an incredible maximum aperture of f/0.95 for a truly dramatic depth of field and next-level low light performance. If I hadn't used flash, Zoey would have been nothing but a shadow as the only other source of light was a window behind Zoey — and I love the color rendition!

NIkon Z50 Entry-level DSLRs may be more affordable than most mirrorless cameras, but with the popularity of mirrorless continuing to grow, you've likely at least thought about going mirrorless. And whether or not you already have Nikon lenses, the Nikon Z 50 should be on your radar thanks to its great image quality and broad feature set. The two-lens kit is a great value, and between the two lenses, the combined focal lengths cover just about every situation you'll encounter, from wide angle to telephoto. That said, the Z50 does have the upper hand over its rivals in two areas. One is value, particularly if you buy the keenly-priced twin-lens kit. The other is handling, which is most noticeable when you compare it to Sony’s less ergonomic Alpha cameras. As for dimensions, the Z50 is essentially a miniaturized Z6. It retains a deep grip and decent handling while only being 126.5 x 93.5 x 60mm, as compared to the Z6’s dimensions of 134 x 100.5 x 67.5mm.

From the menu features standpoint, the Z50 is more advanced than both the D3500 and the D5600. Just like with all other Nikon cameras, it is neatly organized and easy to navigate through. Nikon took a minimalist approach to the menu, only providing the most important options for the camera. If you have previously used a Nikon DSLR or a mirrorless camera, you will feel right at home. The Z50 is a very solid camera with metal top and bottom covers just like the Z7 and Z6. I prefer the Z50's more comfortable plastic control dials over the metal ones of the Z7 and Z6 . Lenses – The lens has dust inside that may affect images. The rubber zoom/focus ring is coming away from the barrel of the lens. Place the Z50 next to its full-frame siblings, the Z6 and Z7, and you can definitely see the family resemblance. There’s the same kind of layout, viewfinder placement and button layout, only in a more compact frame. Set your camera the way I do and you'll always get the sharpest pictures. 99% of the time when people ask me to diagnose their soft pictures it's because they set their camera manually — and set it wrong. Amateurs too often use too high an ISO, too high a shutter speed and too small a lens aperture, all three of which lead to softer pictures:As you can see from the above table, the Nikon Z50 has pretty fierce competition at similar price points. Aside from a couple of differences here and there, most cameras have nearly identical features in the group. Where the competition truly stands out is in autofocus performance – Nikon’s first generation autofocus system on the Z50 is relatively weak when compared to Sony’s refined AF system. Having previously used the A6400, the differences in AF performance and accuracy are quite noticeable. Fuji’s AF system on the X-T30 is also quite fast, although I would rank Nikon’s AF system to be more accurate for still subjects (more on AF performance later in the review). NIKON Z 50 + NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR @ 37mm, ISO 100, 1/4, f/5.6 To keep the body size down, three functions (DISP, Mag + and Mag –) are operated by tapping the edge of the touchscreen, rather than by physical buttons. These options are printed on, rather than being part of the LCD display, and hence can't be reconfigured. They take a bit of getting used-to, but are responsive and work pretty well. Ports and connectivity The battery on the Nikon Z50 can be charged either via the provided charger or via the USB port on the side of the camera. I tested this out in the field when traveling, and the charging via the USB port worked out really well. Just make sure that you are not giving too little or too much power via the USB port (I used between 1.5 and 2 amp power). My only complaint with the USB port is that Nikon went with the older USB Type B Micro port instead of the newer USB Type C. With most cameras and accessories switching over to USB Type C, it would be great if Nikon standardized on it for all future camera models. The sample images displayed on the camera and the images and illustrations in the manuals are for expository purposes only. I love the glowing greens, blues, yellows, oranges and every color that I can get right out of the Z50 as JPGs. Bravo, Nikon! Please note that the above table primarily compares key camera specifications and does not take into account the camera system as a whole. If I were to base the above comparison on things like lens/accessory selection, ergonomics and camera menu system, I would place Fuji as the #1 choice for me personally, followed by Sony and Canon. Why Fuji? Because it is the only manufacturer in the group that created a truly appealing line-up of high-performance lenses that are specifically designed for the camera mount and sensor size. Sony has a wider selection of lenses available, but that’s if you take into account its full-frame (FE) lenses. Canon mostly has slow zoom lenses in its EF-M lens line-up. More great news is that the 16-50mm and 50-250mm lenses, which I'll review formally next, are each superb: ultra sharp at every setting, completely devoid of distortion as shot on the Z50, light, compact, collapse for travel and each autofocuses super fast and has fantastic image stabilization (VR). It's about time Nikon hit another one out of the park; I'm LOVING my Z50 system! With a battery inserted in the camera, the EH-7P or EH-8P can be used to charge the battery while the camera is switched OFF or to power the camera while it is switched ON. These accessories are compatible with all Z series cameras except for the Z 50 which uses the EH-73P. What is USB Power Delivery
