Description

The Irish pound coin was only produced for 10 years, from 1990 to 2000. The most valuable among these are the special commemorative coins, released to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations in 1995, and for the millennium. 1945-1995 U.N. Silver Proof coins in perfect condition are worth €250.00. Special millennium commemorative coins known as the Millennium Piedfort Silver Proof are worth €45.00. The regular Irish one-pound coins for each year were inconsistent, as an undetermined number did not fully complete the engrailing process for the edge. These are slightly more valuable. In fact, out of most of the pennies issued for circulation during King George V’s reign, the 1921 dated penny is one of the most common of them all. The Infamous 1933 Penny fine condition: €25.00; very fine condition: €95.00; extra fine condition: €175.00; uncirculated: €350.00

As the 1921 penny was issued for circulation it is only natural that some are in better condition than others, which is why the value can vary so much. Design Of The 1921 Penny

Pound

The composition changed from 95% copper, 4% tin and 1% zinc to 95.5% copper, 3% tin and 1.5% zinc – these specifications for the 1921 penny can be seen in the table below as well as the other important details: Copper (%) the upright of the E almost parallel with that of the P in PENNY, and the second as for 1906 with the E more Somewhat overshadowed the "D" mint mark - 1928 Denver variety is quietly difficult to find in higher grades. With less attention, premiums are moderate. Both however are in demand to complete date and mint mark collections of wheat pennies.

None of these were ever released to the public, only directly from the mint to collectors in BU (“Brilliant Uncirculated”) sets, but a few have turned up over the years. Very fine condition: €25.00; extra fine condition: €50.00; uncirculated: €100.00

Two obverse varieties exist for the 1921 dated issues. We are indebted to Declan Magee and Numista member Sjoelund for the image below indicating the differences. If there is one thing to learn about George V pennies, it is that the specification of the coin changed quite frequently.
