About this deal

SMALL-MEDIUM SIZE REEL Models: 2500, 3500, 4500, 5500 - Suitable for medium-heavy inshore applications and light-medium offshore fishing . Fish them on a 10-12ft light surf rod for whiting, dart and more. Or use them on a short boat rod for snapper and other reef fish or on a light jigging rod. Most sizes will also suit an 7-9ft general purpose spin rod. High speed options exist in the 2500 and 4500 size for blistering lures like metal slugs through the water column. is provided to the left of LOW QTY. Please refer to the "Usually ships in X" details on the 2nd line of IPX6 is the rating this reel gets for its sealed design to prevent saltwater from accessing the internal components like bearings and gears. This is important because of salt spray and water coming off the line as it respools. It’s crucial that you have a well-sealed reel to prevent water from accessing and rusting everything out. Penn offers some of the best technology in this regard. Dura-Drag System Building on the success of the popular Slammer III series, the latest Slammer IV edition has been redesigned and improved. Continuing with their IPX6 rated waterproof sealed mainbody and spool system. The drag system has been redesigned and now has much greater usable range, giving you more control when your dealing with lunges from hard fighting fish. The larger sizes now come equipped with Penn's Dura Drag, while the 2500 size comes fitted with the HT-100 carbon fibre washers instead. While all models in the range now come with full brass gearing and internals. With a wide selection of sizes available, there’s something here to cover every sea lure fishing scenario.

Size 4500- Gear Ratio 6.2:1 -Bearings 9 - Max Drag 30lb/13.6kg - Mono Capacity m/mm 390/0.25 215/0.33 - Instant Anti-Reverse Normally, this is where I would include a chart to help break down the various models of whatever reel I’m reviewing but in this case, the Penn Slammer IV has 13 different reel sizes which is a plus in itself. But, it makes it hard to put together a chart that large.

With this new and improved reel in your arsenal, prepare to become a saltwater legend.

The Penn Slammer IV features many of the technologies you have come to love on the Slammer III, like IPX waterproof Seal and CNC Gear technology. However, a few extra ball bearings are now included (now 8), plus a hydrophobic line roller bearing for improved performance and water resistance. Then there has been a rotor weight reduction by approximately 10-15% in most models too.

All of the reels you’ll find in this price range are going to perform well, hold up for a long time, and likely meet your expectations. Only people with experience tearing down reels would be able to tell the difference between some of these features. Size 5500- Gear Ratio 5.6:1 -Bearings 9 - Max Drag 40lb/18.1kg - Mono Capacity m/mm 390/0.28 210/0.36 - Instant Anti-Reverse To further protect the internal working parts this reel range features an IPX6 rated sealed system. This is designed to minimise ingress of water into the gear box and drag system and is designed to maintain full performance and to minimise the chance of corrosion. Machined aluminium power knob and spare Hypalon knob across the range (excluding 2500 size which has Hypalon knob only) We wondered if, at a weight of 22.4oz (633g) the reel would feel heavy? Nope! We actually found that the reel balances really well on our typical 11ft to 11ft 6in bass rods, also on the longer European style soft tipped boat rods around the 10ft to 11ft length we prefer for general boat drift fishing and species hunting. For that reason alone, I only discussed the various features that I think will have an impact on the performance of the reel in a way that will make catching fish easier and more enjoyable for you. The reel is smooth in operation, but from new you can feel the gears more than some other reels. That said, it’s a common trait with the more upmarket Penn reels that much like a car, they actually get run-in the more you use them becoming smoother. The Slammer® name needs little introduction in saltwater circles, developing a cult following for being synonymous with bulletproof strength and lasting the distance no matter the conditions. Now Slammer® appears on a PENN® rod range, representing the next generation of high performance sportfishing rods, with powerful, lightweight blanks combining with renowned Slammer® durability. The range is also equipped with tangle-free Fuji® K frame guides containing SiC inserts, Fuji® reel seats, and contoured high density EVA grips for a technical, sensitive, and premium finish. The point of having a full metal body and side plate is to help keep everything aligned properly when the reel is under pressure. When there is plastic or cheaper materials used, the reel will flex which can mess up the pinion and gears inside resulting in a shorter lifespan and reduced smoothness over time. CNC Gearing Let’s be honest here - if you go down the Penn Slammer IV route for UK and Irish bass fishing, they are already way more than enough spinning reel for the fish we catch from a strength/drag point of view, indeed you have most likely made your choice because of what the reels can do for you as regards standing up to saltwater hassles and so on. I also love the Shimano Stradic and Vanford spinning reels that I have fished with, but if money were no object I’d be very tempted by some of the Shimano Stellas instead. But in reality do I need more spinning reel than a Stradic or a Vanford or a Slammer for what I do with lure fishing for bass?
