About this deal

This reads as a true crime book with photos which make this book feel even more real. But it is a work of fiction. I had to remind myself of this several times while reading. Parts are taken from the Author's real life which also give this book a very authentic feel. Don't stop reading when you reach the end, the Author's note is a must-read section of this book as well. Chizmar invented his own genre, and that's more than enough to cement his status as one of horror fiction's greats."

You’re going to *love* this. Chizmar’s enchanting abilities will hook you and draw you under the surface until he decides to let you go, and then you’ll realize you’ve just been comfortably on the beach the whole time with a book in your hand.” — Horror Bound Whilst my editors have advised me that it is not proper etiquette to accuse an author of murder, I think it is noteworthy to state that Richard Chizmar himself was at the top of my suspect list while reading this novel. After spending several months binge-watching Criminal Minds, I feel I can safely add “FBI investigator” to my resume. Speaking as an expert in the “who-done-it” field, this reviewer found Chizmar’s fascination with the crime to be highly suspect. With Chizmar clipping newspaper articles, listening to a police scanner, and questioning local news outlets and even the sheriff himself for more information, I feel the crew at the BAU [the Behavior Analysis Unit of the FBI , made notorious from Criminal Minds]would have scooped him up early on. Finding Chizmar’s alibis for the nights of the murders shaky at best, I wondered if Richard Chizmar himself was The Boogeyman. What did not work? RC: He actually was caught in the early or mid 90s, but not for the crimes he committed in Edgewood. He was arrested for a completely unrelated crime in Baltimore City and eventually admitted that he was the mysterious Phantom Fondler. Evidence from the various crime scenes matched up, so the authorities knew he was telling the truth. Hammer in hand, Richard Chizmar’s come to shatter the idea that everything’s already been done. An absolutely chilling mash-up of styles, media, biography, and legend. Elastic, unsettling, brilliant. And here you thought you knew the names of every genre.” —Josh Malerman, New York Times bestselling author of Bird Box and Malorie

He is the co-author (with Stephen King) of the bestselling novella, Gwendy’s Button Box and the founder/publisher of Cemetery Dance magazine and the Cemetery Dance Publications book imprint. He has edited more than 35 anthologies and his short fiction has appeared in dozens of publications, including multiple editions of Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine and The Year’s 25 Finest Crime and Mystery Stories. He has won two World Fantasy awards, four International Horror Guild awards, and the HWA’s Board of Trustee’s award. a b Grobar, Matt (February 22, 2022). " The Boogeyman: David Dastmalchian, Marin Ireland, Vivien Lyra Blair & Madison Hu Board 20th Century Studios' Stephen King Adaptation". Deadline Hollywood. Archived from the original on February 22, 2022 . Retrieved February 22, 2022. At night it was an altogether different story. The house loomed over us in the darkness, hungry and alert and sly, and to dare walk past it was a terrifying odyssey that only the bravest of neighborhood kids would even consider undertaking. “Brave” certainly wasn’t a word many people would’ve used to describe us, but we did it anyway out of a combination of pure laziness (a shortcut was a shortcut, after all) and a masochistic desire to torture ourselves. Richard Chizmar births a new genre, and though many great authors have and continue to work off of and dwell in the horror-crime-thriller realm, this novel is wonderfully different.” — The Forgotten Fiction

Chasing the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar | Waterstones

One of the Goodreads Most Popular Horror Novels of 2021 and a Goodreads Choice Award nominee for Best Books of 2021This brilliant work of metafiction crafts a not-so-true crime story that feels ripe for a Netflix series….Chizmar’s novel isn’t just a clever riff on genre; it’s a meditation on the dangers and darkness of home, on what happens when the place where we grew up finally grows up itself—or at least when it discovers the violence it’s capable of….A meticulously remembered, beautifully crafted hometown nightmare that reminds readers that nostalgia cuts both ways; sure, it can keep our past alive, but it can also be the shadow man standing at the foot of your bed….For true crime and horror fans, this one’s essential.” — Library Journal (starred review) A typical summer day for us ran the gamut of youthful adventure. We played every outdoor sport known to man, and some others that we invented out of sheer boredom. We popped tar bubbles on the road with our toes. Cheated at Marco Polo in the Cavanaughs’ aboveground swimming pool. Fished in the nearby creeks, ponds, and rivers. Explored the endless woods, and built secret underground forts. Sometimes, our good friend Steve Sines would join us and bring along his father’s .22 semiautomatic rifle. We’d spend long afternoons hunting for crows and vultures in the woods or shooting at empty cans and bottles. Other times, we’d practice responsible gun safety by pointing at each other’s shoes and yelling, “Jump!” before pulling the trigger and blasting the dirt where our friend’s feet had stood only seconds earlier. It’s a miracle we still have all our toes.
