If you already like what you see with the 306P MkII but want a little extra grunt, the larger 308P MkII is worth considering. A capable and powerful 8-inch studio monitor.

Unlike some competitors in the space, which aim to influence sales with flashy boxes at Guitar Center and other big box stores, the 306P MkII arrive in unassuming cardboard boxes — the first indication that the company has pinched pennies wherever possible to put its money into sound quality. Inside are just the speakers and power cables, as well as an instruction manual for each. As with most studio monitors, you’ll need to grab connection cables and a digital audio interface to feed them signal. Features and design JBL offers an excellent 5-year warranty on professional loudspeaker products (except enclosures). Amplifiers are warrantied for three years, and enclosures for two. The warranty covers materials and workmanship. Our Take Scan-Speak does 28 minutes total of 1 minute on, 2 minutes off. Weighted pink noise with a crest factor of 2dB (my CF is 12dB). Link. This particular model includes a magnetically shielded, 6.5-inch mid/low-frequency transducer with a 1.5-inch voice coil, and a self-repairing dust dome that smooths out any accidental dents all by itself. (I gave it a gentle prod to test that claim and all seems well!) By reducing thermal-related effects such as power compression, the monitors are able to perform consistently over the full range of listening levels. A continuous rated SPL of 98dB is quoted along with peak SPL handling of 110dB at one metre (pink noise, C–weighted).

The below graphic indicates just how much SPL is lost (compression) or gained (enhancement; usually due to distortion) when the speaker is played at higher output volumes instantly via a 2.7 second logarithmic sine sweep referenced to 76dB at 1 meter. The signals are played consecutively without any additional stimulus applied. Then normalized against the 76dB result. Long term testing results in speaker magnet/baskets so hot they can almost burn your hand. (not saying he needs to go that far). Keep in mind that Amir measured this distortion at 86dB which is fairly loud - into danger territory, even. Hopefully nobody is listening at an average near 86dB. Though we would indeed like to have plenty of headroom to push higher than 86dB for those brief dynamic peaks. Output is limited by the internal DSP. From my testing, this occurs somewhere between 96dB and 102dB at 1 meter and results in significant limiting of the output signal. If one assumes 3dB of in-room gain and 6dB from adding a second speaker, this works out to be approximately a maximum volume of 105dB at 1 meter and 93dB at 4 meters, in-room for a pair. It is therefore reasonable to assume that these are not ideal for farfield, long-term high output listening and are best relegated to nearfield or midfield use for higher output levels. If listening at moderate volumes, these make a reasonable solution in terms of output levels. The rear of each speaker features a three-prong power input, a power switch, and both XLR and TRS balanced inputs. There are also low frequency and high frequency adjustment switches, which can be employed to adjust for less-than ideal locations — allowing you to roll off a bit of the bass if you place them in corners or directly on top of a desk, and boost or roll off high frequencies, depending on the acoustics of your room. There’s also a volume knob on each speaker, allowing you to adjust volume directly or set them so that they won’t ever go above your desired max volume, regardless of how hard you push the signal to them. These are my everyday speakers in my main setup. I'm no golden ears, but having listened to a lot of passive commercial and DIY speakers in this price range they are definitely my favorite, except for maybe the DIY Amiga towers (though that is a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison) While the two EQ options (low and high-frequency shelf) are nice, I do wish there were additional options for fine-tailoring the sound to a particular location a la the Kali IN-5 I recently reviewed. Though, that would also factor into the cost. Soundstage is surprisingly deep (at least, with experience typically only lending itself to the concentric drivers like Kef in this regard). I was really surprised when I measured mine and noticed that 1.6khz dip. We see more of distortion between 1 and 2 kHz in the larger 308P than in 306P. The larger woofer seems unhappier in the higher range than the smaller one in 306P. Or there are sample variations. Engineered to JBL Linear Spatial Reference design criteria for outstanding accuracy in any acoustical environment It’s also immediately clear that the Image Control Waveguide is playing an important part in the room-filling sound, as the stereo image remains coherent without being focused into a tight, central sweet spot. The Waveguide also does a superb job, ensuring fine integration between the mid/bass and high-frequency drivers, as moving my head vertically up and down a single monitor’s front baffle reveals no phase-related issues. Big sound, small speaker Wrapped Around Your Finger - Glaring sound from what I assume is the synth (@ 0:26 & 0:30, for example) lights up badly. Again, I believe this is enclosure resonance.The same attention to detail within the audio range. A good choice for composing, mixing, and mastering. Wireless audio is the big theme in this year's lineup, with JBL announcing a soundbar and two wireless speaker lines, and Harman Kardon announcing a new high-end home theater line that can wirelessly create a 5.1 surround sound system. You simply get great sound. Even in hostile situation of just being thrown on my desk. Point them at your ear, plug them in and you are in business. OK, you should apply that little EQ correction but that is it.

minutes and 4 minutes in my opinion is hardly 'long term'. At 4 minutes, the magnet structures won't even be warm. The voice coils will shed their heat much faster to cold adjacent pole pieces/magnets. The electronics (amplifiers) will be barely above ambient and any crossover components (in passives) will not be stressed, letalone warm. A major test of the 306P’s performance is to hear how well they integrate with our own monitoring system, comprising ATC SCM100A main and SCM25A midfield monitors, along with Yamaha NS10M nearfields. The JBLs perform superbly in this context, sounding naturally balanced, free from hype and insightful. In terms of scale, they sound far bigger than our NS10s and, with their widescreen soundstaging, on a par with the larger SCM 25As. With that in mind, I would easily recommend the 306Ps as the sole monitoring system in modestly sized project studios. ConclusionWhen used alongside Pro Tools 12 and our interface for mixing, we had a very easy time balancing mixes, adjusting equalization settings, and adding compression, finding that our mixes always translated as expected to other devices and listening settings. Our only gripe was that the speakers had a small amount of amp hiss when in a very quiet room with no sound playing, but that’s to be expected of any powered speakers with this volume potential and at this price point, and it became unnoticeable whenever sound was playing at any volume.
