She was really pleased that I chose to copy her princess craft for kids and share it here too – apparently my one is the queen and her’s is the princess. Next cut out a crown from coloured card ensuring that it’s big enough to stretch across the whole length of your princesses head. Having a large vocabulary and understanding complex language helps children learn to read and write. Listening to stories is an important contributor to a child’s language skills. There are millions of children’s storybooks, and while each one is different, most of them have a similar underlying structure. Just as every house has an inside frame that we can’t see, every story is built around an invisible framework. Compare Elizabeth to other unconventional princesses, for example Fiona in Shrek or Elsa from Frozen. I thought about that and changed around the ending of one of my dragon stories. That made the adults a lot happier, and the kids did not mind. The original ending had Princess Elizabeth punching Ronald in the nose. When Michael Martchenko drew a picture of that it looked a bit too violent, so we changed it around and had Princess Elizabeth call Ronald a bum. Later, when Scholastic International wanted to do a book club edition for England, Australia and New Zealand they said “We can’t use bum. People in England don’t call each other bums. They just don’t do it. Princess Elizabeth should call Ronald a toad”.Now that your child has heard the story, you can continue to use CSPAR names, make comments and start to ask questions about what is happening in the story to see if your child is understanding the words you are reading. Be careful not to ask too many questions, as they can make your child feel like she is being tested but asking a few will help solidify your child’s understanding of story structure.

The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch | Goodreads

How would the story have been different if Elizabeth hadn’t gone after Ronald or if Ronald had been a nicer person? Elizabeth doesn't stand for this and responds by telling him that he is pretty and a prince, but a "bum". It then ends with an illustration of Elizabeth running off into the sunset with glee since they did not get married after that. The dragon in the story claimed that he could burn up to ten forests with his fiery breath. He also claimed to be able to fly around the world in just ten seconds. In this activity, you will be encouraging creative writing with a bragging contest. Write the following phrases on the chalkboard and have the class come up with exaggerated responses. Invite your students to really stretch their imaginations and come up with the most ridiculous brags. Cutler, Laura (2018). "Challenging the familiar: Using fractured fairy tales to introduce critical literacy". Literacy Today. 35 (6): 36–37.Look at a range of images of dragons in art and mythology, for example Japanese dragons, the Welsh dragon, St George and the Dragon by Kandinsky. did one of Elizabeth's methods for exhausting the dragon really have to involve burning dozens of forests? I know this was written nearly thirty years ago, but certainly even then it was distressing for a dragon to destroy hundreds of trees, and potentially harm lots of wildlife living there.
