Description

The illustrations are beautiful. It’s a calming book where you are able to follow the journey of water. The main character pours water from a bottle into a stream and we go on a journey with the water from a little stream, to the ocean, to the clouds, to the ground. A great book to learn about the water cycle. Grahame Baker-Smith is a huge talent in picture book illustration, and his images of the natural world here are deep, vibrant and painterly, which will absorb slightly older picture book readers in their watery depths.' - Book Trust

This book could be used at the beginning of an infant science topic about the water cycle, where children could be encouraged to produce a story map of the water’s journey through the book. This could act as a springboard from which to learn more about the water cycle through an experiment (the ‘cloud in a jar’ experiment springs to mind).Your class will add int he words to complete the sentences and look for simpler synonyms for the vocabulary chosen for this KS1 activity. Baker-Smith explores the global life cycle of water and weather, reminding children that small actions and experiences are always a vital part of the bigger picture; that we all belong to the world, as much as a drop of rain, a blue whale and the ocean itself.

The Rhythm of the Rain is poetically written, yet it’s very clear and concise so I think children of all ages will understand the themes here, and with discussion it would be perfect for use in schools. It’s gentle and rhythmic and very easy to read out loud. Isaac is playing in the pool on the side of his mountain. He empties his jar of water into the pool that flows into a stream down the side of the mountain as the rain falls. Isaac follows the flow of the water down a waterfall, into a river that flows across the country, through the city, into the ocean, across the world, into mist, forming as clouds and comind down as rain again. The real triumph of this book is in the almost otherworldly scenes depicted in its illustrations' - Just Imagine Centre Izak speelt graag bij de waterplas bij zijn favoriete berg. This KS1 resource is based on the popular book The Rhythm of the Rain, which is best suited for the water topic. In this activity we cover phonics phases 3-6 and your class must locate the words with the particular sounds within them.

The accompanying writing provides a narrative and adds human elements to the water’s journey, making links to the water cycle and physical geography. Issac plays in his favourite pool on the mountainside. As rain starts to fall, he empties his little jar of water into the pool and races the sparkling streams as they tumble over waterfalls, rush through swollen rivers and burst out into the vast open sea. Where will my little jar of water go now? Issac wonders. On the other side of the world, Cassi welcomes the rain to her parched village . . . From tiniest raindrop to deepest ocean, this breathtaking celebration of the water cycle captures the remarkable movement of water across the earth in all its majesty. A stunning new non-fiction picture book from Greenaway medal-winner, Grahame Baker-Smith. About This Edition ISBN:written by Angela McAllister. Farther, which uses photographic collage and illustration, is the first book that Grahame has written and illustrated. It won the Greenaway Medal in 2011. Constantly experimenting with different styles of illustration, Grahame likes to challenge the conventional boundaries with his artwork. It teaches children about the water cycle in a way that isn't simply spitting facts, it puts it into a real life context and how it affects different people in different locations which I found really lovely. Issac is playing in his favourite pool on the mountainside when it begins to rain. Upon emptying his little jar of water into the pool, he follows the journey of the water through streams, over waterfalls, along rivers and out into the vast open sea. Wondering where the little jar of water will go next, readers are taken on an epic journey of water. The story shows how we are all linked by water and provides a more emotional and real approach to the water cycle. I enjoyed the book very much. My favourite part of it was when he followed the river to the sea and met all the animals and discovered new parts of the world. Last half term, as part of our rivers topic, Year 3/4 children read a book called 'The Rhythm of the Rain' by Grahame Baker-Smith.
