Description

Sir Ralph Payne-Gallwey’s gun was also of 1½in bore but it was double barrelled and 9ft long. It had one trigger that was selective — either right, left or both barrels could be chosen. Like Hawker’s gun, when both barrels were fired, there was a slight delay between detonation, allowing for the birds to rise into the second charge. Most punt-guns are crude, single-barrel devices; ironmongery rather than fine gunmaking. They have to endure frequent dousing in salt water and the rigours of being hauled in and out of the sea in rough weather by tired men with cold hands. A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Colonial Gentry, vol. II, ed. Ashworth P. Burke, 1895, pp. 776–777. The gun was converted, by WAGBI (Wildfowlers’ Association of Great Britain and Ireland, now BASC) founder Stanley Duncan, into two single-barrel guns in the mid-20th century. He cited insufficient wildfowl numbers to justify double discharges in British waters. And just as awful, albeit on a smaller scale, on December 14th, 1829 he notes:' .... all I fired at was (one barrel) at 4 curlews, all of which came into the larder. This shot, although at mere rubbish, was a satisfactory beginning'. Wilkie, G.; Wilkie, T. (1821). Regular encounters on the marshes with other shooters, including what were described variously as 'swarms of gunners' and 'gangs of shore shooters', illustrate just how much pressure the wildlife faced. Indeed, it's a wonder anything at all survived. He also records, though, details of local people following behind the gunners in the hope of retrieving dead or dying birds, presumably for the pot - times then were certainly tough for the poorer members of society. I`m doing some other research into Hawkers original diaries which is very slow going since, in later life, his handwriting was almost illegible. An image from Hawker's diary captioned 'Return to Keyhaven after a day's gunning, in the winter of 1838'. (The Gun Inn and Hawker's Cottage, externally little changed to this day, can be seen in the centre of the picture). Hawker also published an (originally anonymous) memoir on the Peninsula War. [7] Revisionist views of Hawker & his works [ ] Hawker was an keen amateur musician, studying the piano under Henri Bertini and he regularly played the organ at his local church. [11] Hawker's interest in music was not limited to playing however, he devised and patented a device to assist the teaching of the piano; namely his “hand moulds”. [12] Hawker and the development of firearms [ ]Hawker is perhaps best know for his exploits as a wildfowler and general killer of wild birds, pastimes that were sadly even more acceptable in his day than today; and as the author of a wildfowling book, 'Instructions to Young Sportsmen', which was first published in 1814. However, as with most challenges brought about by necessity, the physical exercise, endeavour, hope, elation of success and the frisson of danger made the act of hunting for necessity into a sport. It was a much-loved recreation in the lives of hard-working men. Holland & Holland first notes the manufacture of a punt-gun in 1872 and thereafter made several, improving on the design each time. A typical Holland & Holland punt-gun of the 1880s was the London, which was a single-barrel breechloading gun, 8½ft long, weighing 100lb and of 1½in bore. In later life Hawker designed a "military musket" and commissioned the manufacture of several prototypes at his own expense. Hawker's musket was favourably received by the Board of Ordnance but was not adopted, being set aside in preference to the Enfield Rifle-Musket, although elements of Hawker's design were incorporated into the final version of the Enfield. Continental Europeans took part in punt-gunning much as the British did and many examples of French-made punt-guns exist. Hawker kept a regular diary which contains observations of Europe before and after the Napoleonic period and of wild-fowling, game-bird shooting and detailed hunting techniques and conditions prevalent in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His diary, printed in an abridged form in two volumes, became a popular work. The most recent paper edition appeared in 1988. Hawker also published an originally anonymous memoir of the Peninsula War. [6] Revisionist views [ edit ]
