About this deal

Without SIn looks at the issue of restorative justice. (Image credit: ITV) Without Sin cast — who's starring When it comes to the mystery of Maisy, it twists and turns. In Nottingham, Stella becomes obsessed with finding out the truth of what happened to her daughter, while in prison, Charles is dealing with his psychological issues, as well as the politics of the criminal underworld and even the politics of his own cell. Each of the four episodes finishes on a proper cliffhanger, and by the time it all comes out in the wash in the finale, there have been more than enough dead ends and red herrings to keep us hooked. It just about avoids the occasional ITV drama curse of having a run of solid episodes then throwing it all away on an implausible, far-fetched ending. When we meet Stella Tomlinson, it's been three years since the murder of her teenage daughter Maisy, but the wound is as fresh as if it were yesterday. We'll update this guide with a US or international release date when more information is released. Is there a trailer for Without Sin?

Fisher also talks McClure through the logistics of the D-day operation, and he unearths a series of photographs that reveal more of the story. There is one of Ralph’s boat in training, with a blurry outline of a signaller in view, though it is impossible to tell if it is him or not. Ralph’s flotilla was there to deliver Sherman tanks to the beaches, and there is a series of photographs of them in action. They are aerial photographs, shot from a great height, but to know that Ralph was there, on the boat that he points out in the picture, is very poignant. The two of them head off to Normandy on the ferry, and as Ralph stands on the beach, that stiff upper lip does crumble, ever so slightly. It was, he admits, “like hell let loose”. German snipers were shooting at him. The boat next to his own was shelled. McClure asks him if he is proud of what he did. “Well, I think I ought to be, now,” he says. A synopsis for the series reads: "The Nottingham-based drama focuses upon Stella’s life three years on from the death of her daughter and how she is still hostage to her grief. The loss of her beloved only child has created deep divisions in her life as she struggles on a daily basis to come to terms with this. Gotta go, boss: I’ve accidentally toppled the series of dominos that will aim a rightwing pro-England political party at the real and dreadful threat of Isis, and in setting an ITV show in the middle of that geopolitical discourse I’ve started off a whole big round of blogging. One last thing before I go: these lurching police dramas might lean on cliffhangers too heavily, yeah, but they do make you sit up and gasp. Nothing wrong with that.

Without Sin (ITVX) is a heavyweight thriller cut from the same cloth as Happy Valley and Save Me, so fans of deep-rooted trauma and grief rejoice, if that’s the sort of thing you do. Either way, this Nottingham-based four-parter is a very strong entry to the genre, taut and solid and compelling, and it does not outstay its welcome. Stella agrees to visit the prison alongside a Restorative Justice mediator and come face to face with her daughter's killer. But nothing could prepare her for what Charles has to say next." McClure attempts to understand that job and convey the staggering difficulties of it to viewers, in part by putting on the uniform the infantrymen would have worn and trying to wade out of the sea. The spectacle is faintly absurd, but the point is well made. “I’ve never known weight like it,” she says, as she sits in a soggy heap on the sand. The historian Stephen Fisher is there to explain that many soldiers failed to make it out of the water at all. I wasted a year doing nothing at 18. I got with a guy and just wanted to hang out. It didn’t do me any favours. The Nottingham-based drama focuses upon Stella’s life three years on from the death of her teenage daughter and how she is still hostage to her grief. McClure, after improvising with Paddy Considine, who’d already been cast, landed the role of Romeo’s sister, Ladine. She was just 15. McClure thought she’d made it, and waited for Hollywood to come calling – until she discovered the film had played in just six cinemas across the UK. And then: nothing.

So if not Doctor Who, what’s ahead? There is, tantalisingly, the promise of a future Meadows collaboration, though exactly what still seems to be undecided. “We speak about working together a lot,” she smiles. “And we’ve had a few little things that have come our way where we’ve thought, oooh, there we go, maybe that’s it? And it will happen, that’s very much a dream of mine. Shane shares the same interests and likes, and [we] have a similar vision. So I think when we do get to do something again, it will be a major moment.” Your production company has worked on the show, why were you keen to set and film it in your home city of Nottingham? McClure has been a performer pretty much all her life. She joined a dance school on her third birthday and then the renowned Nottingham drama school, the Television Workshop, at the age of 11 (“I was very focused,” she says of her childhood). But, unlike many of her fellow actors, she’s from a working-class family – her dad was a joiner and butcher, her mother a hairdresser and stay-at-home mum – and had to rely on free drama training. She auditioned for the prestigious Italia Conti School in London aged 14, but the fees were beyond their reach, and pleas to local council and arts organisations (and even family and friends) were unsuccessful. Bosses have said viewers can expect a new and improved product experience through ITVX as well as more new and exclusive programmes to stream for free than anywhere else. Flagship programming that premiered on the platform's launch included A Spy Among Friends, Tell Me Everything, and The Confessions of Frannie Langton. Stella wrestles with whether to trust Charles and follow up Cleo’s disappearance. At the same time, she tries to unearth who Charles really is, approaching those who knew him best.

Steadfast loyalty is actually the least surprising thing about McClure, but one of the most revealing. She will defend those she cares about (politely). Her relationships are everything: whether with family, friends, her fiance or her colleagues, who seem to inevitably become mates. But while McClure might not be quite sure about her level of fame, I am (and not just because she has the bone structure of a woman whose face belongs on billboards). We meet in December, after a year in which her career has entered the stratosphere, thanks to Line of Duty and its record-breaking sixth series. The one that the BBC says was streamed 137m times, and in which she stars as Kate Fleming, the unemotional, straight-as-a-die undercover specialist. “I mean, we didn’t quite expect it to do that,” she says of the show, as we sit, brews on our knees. “I don’t know how you describe it – those kinds of figures just don’t happen any more; we don’t watch telly in that way.” McClure shakes her head. But last year, we did. Johnny Harris plays mysterious Charles in Without Sin. (Image credit: ITV) Without Sin episode guide Meadows changed McClure’s life – and is still a big part of it. “Shane lives down the road, his wife is my best friend and he’s my mate. We’ve known each other for so long, and the majority of time we spend together is as friends, rather than as director and actor. But [with This Is England] he trusted me with something. I didn’t know where that was gonna lead, none of us did, really.”
